Wondering how many years you have applied for the MN Moose hunt.

How many years did you apply before you got picked?

I am gonna start applying this year.

Considering they have just cut the tags by 50%, it may get a bit trickier to draw. If you are applying for tough BWCA units, your odds are better.

My buddy and I are on year 8 or 9. If/when we are drawn, we’ve decided that we will hunt the entire season (it is a once-in-a-lifetime hunt afterall). We acknowledge that the amount of static this will generate at our respective home-fronts will likely lead to trial separations from our lovely wives. Confident that the relationships will survive this hardship, we will accept this outcome.

Statistically, the average is 8 yrs to get drawn since they have went to bulls only. Now that they cut the tags in half I would guess 12-16 yrs would be the avg.

I happened to draw my first year though in 2009

Not to highjack the thread here but did they ever discover what was killing so many MN moose? I don’t remember if it was one or two years ago but I remember reading in the St. Paul Pioneer Press about both MN moose herds experiencing a significant reduction in numbers. At the time of the article, one herd was down….like 30%, and the other like…60%, with no end in sight.

In reflection, I’m amazed MN is maintaining a season at all! Then again, if you need a specie to rebound and/or flourish, put a hunting season on it! The funding will be much greater from license and application fees than any other government resource.
