Hammered gold is the “never miss” color on LOW. Spinners with gold, hammered brass, chartreuse and sometimes orange blades are the choice. Short or medium snell length is fine. Never a need to use a 8-12′ snell. 3-6′ will work fine. Bottom bouncers are the choice of the NW Angle…but South end you can probably use any kind of sinker most places.

Jigs work well too. This year its been yellow, gold, chartreuse and fire-tiger that have worked for me…but I have fished more NW Angle areas.

On the South end of the lake, most troll or drift live bait rigs most anywhere off Arnesons…probably from 30-20 f.o.w. Usually a nice bite.

Others (including many launches) like to pull deep running cranks anywhere and everywhere. They usually do real well too. If you like trolling cranks in open water, you will not find a better place.

Shallow running cranks near shore are usually nice in the evenings.

I’m leaving tomorrow for another week at the Angle.

    Good luck!

Well just got back from 4 fabulous days of fishing and weather on LOTW.

Very consistent bite going on now at the south end. We had good luck fishing from Twin Rocks to Twin Island area. Others reported good fishing off of Lambertson’s Rock and down by Warroad off of Springsteal point.

When the wind really kicked up so did the fishing and found the bigger fish in 12-4 feet. Otherwise 18-12 feet seemed to hold fish well as the wind died down. No lunkers for us but alot of really nice 18-22 inchers were caught.

When the fish were on the feed as the wind kicked up trolling 4 or 5 size hammered gold/silver or holographic spinners seemed to produce the best bite with at least a trolling speed around 1.5 mph. As the wind lessened smaller blades and slower speeds worked better. We did better with leeches and crawlers, minnows did not seem to produce as many fish.

Hooked into a Sturgeon and battled it for 70-80 minutes before he came up to look over the boat. Once he saw us turned quick and took off with everything he had, my drag couldn’t react quick enough (neither was my ability to back reel) and he just stretched my line out completely rendering it all worthless. A lot of fun, with we could have seen more of him. We estimated him at at least 60-70 inches, but really did not get a good enough look at him.

    Thanks for the report!

    …and welcome to IDO!

With your sturgeon experiance, you’ve given me the itch for the Sept Sturgeon season on the St Croix coming up in Sept.

Lake of the Woods is a great place to make some memories!

I picture myself in my Covert blind it’s just cracking day. I have my shotgun across my lap. My mouth call is in place and I am surrounded by Turkeys gobbling and yelping I let out a few tree yelps and follow that up with a fly down cackle the Toms answer with booming gobbles then I hear them fly down and are headed my way. . . .

Wheres your happy place right now ? ? ? ?

Sitting on the ice on a crisp calm morning watching that first flag pop up and spin like a top. At the same time I just iced a tank ‘gill…turkey hunting dreams are for April

Otherwise, if this one doesn’t work, I just dream about the deer I have named buckzilla…and how good his sheds will look in my hands when the snow melts off a little

My happy place is buried somewhere here on my desk here at work. But that is a good place to be Pat! But I guess mine would be sitting on the edge of a meadow with bow in hand in late September on a crisp morning listening to bull elk screaming off in the distance…knowing that one is making his way to me. I can’t wait for this trip to Colorado this September!

My happy place would be sitting in a tree, over a cut alfalfa field, with a couple corn rows on the edge, bow in the holder, arrow knocked… maybe 55’F and the sun starting to dip

Mine is the same as Happy Gilmores, there a hot chick in white lingerie, a midget bringing me a beer….

    Sorry couldn’t help myself,

This time of year mine would be cresting a ridge and spotting a row of long white tines poking up through the snow, I run down to grab it and notice the match laying a few short feet away……ahhhhh I feel better now
