Wow! That is crazy to think that of all places in the world that MN would have a record bull elk running around. Not the typical spot that you would call out on the list of states with known big bulls.

Isn’t it a pretty small herd?

    Thanks for sharing

Yes, very small. And due to a large amount of complaints from the local agriculture community, the DNR is erradicting one of the smaller herds. I guess the elk are doing a bunch of damage up there.

I’ll see if I can dig up the article. The herd was very small and the local farmers were reporting major damage to their crops. I don’t think elk will be viable in Mn long term due to the social ramifications they have caused so far.

They can not do near as much damage as the deer do.

Thanks for posting the articles John…very interesting read. You would think they could do something other than getting sharpshooters to wipe them out though!

Thanks for the article it was a good read. Just doesn’t seem right to kill of a native species just because we changed the land to suit our needs instead of the wildlife.

The bull likely was exhausted from the rut along with being very old, he was probably at the end of his life. When he jumped the fence and lost his footing in the soft ground, I can see how this could happen.

Like Prieser, I know some guys that have had this issue too.

I really struggle with the DNR paying money to sharpshooters to kill these animals when they could have a hunt and make a large portion of money. Some hunts (NM Oryx hunts) that require you to pay a DNR agent to come on the hunt with you and verify every shot and then test the animal for diseases on the spot to ensure the herd. Why does the DNR not look into this?

Sorry for the sidebar. Those are some very cool pictures of a very majestic animal. I hope to hunt them in the very near future

Careful! The roar of a bull elk is very addicting. Nothing better in the woods in my opinion.

Bulls this size walking around might bring in some tourist money to the area. I know in Pa. people come from all over to see their herd. Mabye the publisity from this might be a good thing for minnesota elk.

A lot of states have reintroduced elk and are doing bery well. WI’s efforts are troubled by wolves but honestly, we need elk to feed these predators cuz they decimate the deer numbers without them….which brings a sidenote to NEEDING a season on wolves too….but I fail to see why MN doesn’t try a little harder. I know I’ve read that the approx. 1000 elk herd in WI has stayed within a 40sq.mi. area from it’s original introduction. It appears that they don’t roam too much so some farmers might feel a lot of pressure while others only feel a little. Just a thought.

Last I read, WI had plans to introduce elk in 7 new counties in 2010 or 2011, I forget which, because of the success achieved in the Chequamagon. They were also supposed to release 10 bull tags for 2010 but nothing seemed to come of that. I’m anxiously awaiting elk hunting in WI simply because I want to support the program. I may never draw a tag but I’d like to see them re-established to the ecosystem of our woods.

You got it Kooty. I spoke with these guys directly and that is exactly how they explained it. With fresh snow on the ground, it was apparently pretty obvious how it all went down.
    cheers
