This was passed on to me by my neighbor at our campground…we both have F150’s that do the same thing, they run great, just when taking off they stumble and sometimes die. They start right back up and will run fine, just can’t gun it.

He said he had his in last week, the tech took the line/bulb and installed the bulb right next to the motor, per Yamaha’s instruction. I mean it has maybe an inch of fuel line coming out of the motor, bulb then the rest of the line going to the tank.

He said his motor no longer dies/stumbles out of the hole.

I havn’t had a chance to do the new install on mine but will soon.

Might want to give it a try.

Try Ring Free as well, It is an aditive by Yamaha to remove deposits on the piston and the fuel lines and system.

Just a few things that come to my mind to check. When you changed the bulb did you change the line also? Could pieces from the bulb found their way into your carb/s? Check all connections for tightness. Don’t use gas with alcohol. Check fuel filter and make sure the gas flow is unrestricted.

    Good luck

I have a F40 also and had it to the dealer a couple of times before getting smarter on what to feed this engine. I had gummed up idle jets in 1 or 2 of the carbs which caused symptoms just exactly like what you’re telling here. First time the mechanic cleaned them and all was well but I didn’t use sea foam so the trouble came back (I use this motor mostly in Winter so sits a lot in summer). Second time, and $180 later, I started using seafoam per his instructions, and I have now been trouble free for 3 seasons. I just had it out yesterday and it started on the 2nd spin and idled, accelerated, and ran perfectly. I’d get the carbs cleaned on yours and I’m betting your problems will go away.

I forgot to mention, the fuel I use in my engines is the best I can buy, ethanol free. In Rochester that happens to be 92+ octane premium. One of the guys on IDO mentioned a few years ago that premium gas lasts a lot longer than the cheap stuff before it deteriorates. I believe he was right because I see no more issues in my engines since I started using the stuff. Oh BTW…seafoam is a standard additive in my shop gas cans.

I had the same problem on a Merc 40 4 strk, my issue was that the carbs weren’t synced up. Brought it in under warranty, they synced up the carbs and that cleared up my issue. Just food for thought.

Sounds similar to problems I had in the spring of ’05 & ’06 with my Honda 90 4 stroke. On both occasions, the carbs had gummed up over the winter. I had a tech tell me to use Evinrude 2+4 each time I fill and then run a bottle of Ring Free through for about a 1/2 hour on my last trip of the season. I had been using Sea Foam, but he said Sea Foam & Stabil weren’t strong enough. Following his recommendations, I only use premium gas and winterize the motor myself. Not a problem since.

I believe premium fuel has more ethanol in it. If you remember “Back in the day” when premium used to be called “Ethyl?” That was Ethyl Alcohol I believe…
Premium gas is used for high compression engines, and I don’t believe it is engineered to last any longer than normal gas. I know there are many of you out there smarter than me who could set me straight if I am wrong…

SOUNDS LIKE A CARBORATOR PROBLEM TO ME ALMOST LIKE THE FLOATS MIGHT BE STICKING I ALSO LIKE THE BULB IDEA I THINK THAT WOULD MAKE SINCE. RIGHT NOW THE REASON THE MOTOR DOESNT RUN CORRECTLY IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE A PERIOD OF TIME WHEN YOU DONT HAVE ENOUGH FUEL.

LET US KNOW WHAT HAPPEND WITH THE MOVING THE BALL. THIS CAN BE FIGURED OUT PRETTY EASILY KEEP US UPDATED

Tried the short fuel line it helped but didnt solve the problem talked to dealer he said the carbs need adjusted that they are factory set for polution and that the adustment screws are then covered by a brass fitting that has to be drilled out to readjust going to try take to him this weekend.

It doesn’t have more, and some have none. What I mean by this is there are designated premium pumps at some stations that are “non-oxygenated” (no ethanol) for use in snowmobiles, collector cars, etc. These are the pumps you want to use to avoid ethanol. I use this in all my season engines as I don’t want ethanol in any of them, period. The stuff is horrible in more ways than one.

BTW, Yamaha doesn’t recommend any gas with more than 10% ethanol content, and at this present date the state of MN requires 10% in all pumps (unless designated as mentioned above).

So look for the little yellow sticker that says “non-oxygenated” and fill’r up with the GOOD STUFF! Some people say it doesn’t matter, but when I’m out on the water I want to get back to the dock and I’d rather be safe than sorry, or paddling.
