where to look?, I have always heard that elm trees are best, but what do you do when there are very few elms around? I’ve been told you will never find them around pine/cedar trees, but always do. I look for grassy areas just a few feet into the woods early on and go in deeper as the year progresses. Sandy soil always warms up quicker than black dirt. I’m going to make a run into the woods tonight and hopefully pick up a bunch, pictures tomorrow.

I found half a plastic grocery bag last night south of Rochester. They were all under one dying elm that was in a grassy area. They are starting to pop out with this sun.

I’ve been finding mine on steep south facing slopes with good dark dirt. The key is those dead elms. My rule of thumb is the more bark on the tree the better. But the tree has to be dead. Over time dead elms lose their luster and they don’t produce as many mushrooms. The fresh dead trees seem to produce the most. Start on extreme south facing slopes right now, then check your shadier areas as the month wears on. Right now i’ve been finding nearly all yellows on the south slope, and they’re getting pretty good sized. Another 4 days of this weather and I’m going to hit my shady stuff for the big grays. It starts to come easy to you the more you get out, but the key is walking and checking as many trees as possible. And always keep your eye on the ground. I found 5 or 6 big ones yesterday in the middle of a ridge road, no dead elm in sight.

Yes mushrooms have a great market this time of year. I sell mine to wiebke here in LAX. but there are co-ops and restaurants all over the country that would buy them from you. Surely you could find somewhere in the twin cities that would buy them

and you’ll probably get a lot more in the big city than I get down here for them.

Found a lot of them near Hudson yesterday. South facing hill and mostly small. Many were already dry on the outside. A little rain and warm temps would do the tick although I have more than I need now.
