Anyone own an avalanche and haul a 4 wheeler in the truck bed? I’ve got an 07 avy and a yamaha 660 grizzy. I see the truck bed has treads for 4 wheeler traction, but after doing the measurements, the tailgate will not close. I’d guess 3-5 inches of the 4 wheeler will be hanging on the tail gate..Is it ok to have part of the wheeler hanging on the gate? My trips this fall will be about 150 highway miles.

I see it all the time with different types of trucks. Just be sure you tie it in with multiple safely straps that have the proper load rating. It’s an expensive toy to lose because you skimped on $15.00 straps.
September 29, 2010 at 5:19 pm #87093I put my Honda fourtrax in the bed of my silverado all the time with the tailgate down. definetly take the advice on straps. this is one thing worth overdoing! I skimped last year on a trip, slammed on the breaks and shattered my rear pannel of glass.

September 29, 2010 at 5:20 pm #87095I know in the early 2000’s chevy had trouble with the strap hinges on the tailgate rusting and breaking. I think they fixed the problem but I would still take extra percautions. I’s say if the tires make it on to the bed your good to go!

September 29, 2010 at 6:44 pm #87108No problem there, your in the same boat with every guy who doesn’t own either a truck with an 8′ bed or a 250 wheeler…
Watch it if you have a winch, like mentioned, with an agressive brake, it can come forward and shatter your rear window… I put something like a spare tire for the trailer, or something like that ( I have used a smaller foam target also) , to make sure it cannot go ahead any.

Hey now i also have a 250 and that is the best little wheeler, it can fit anywhere and with the right person on it, it can go anywhere the big ones can.
September 29, 2010 at 9:26 pm #87136That’s what I mean You can probably strap it to the deck lid of a Civic and be alright
September 30, 2010 at 1:05 am #87157I thought on the avalanches you could fold the back window down and you practically park the 4 wheeler in the back seat. Did they stop doing that??
September 30, 2010 at 9:07 pm #87247All good one thing I would recommend is that you use a safety chain also because those darn straps tend to come loose due to the suspension and low pressure tires.
October 1, 2010 at 1:30 pm #87312Not sure on Avalanche box size but I put my JD Gator 6X4 complete with steel cab in my 2001 GMC short box (6.5′). It’s 9 feet long bumper to dump box. One tip on putting wheelers in the box: I had to back mine in so bumper wouldn’t hit the window. My rear bumper hit the box first instead of the window. Otherwise put a couple 4″X4″s vertically and strap them to the bumper so it cant hit your back window if you put them in normally.
Ferny.
October 1, 2010 at 1:38 pm #87314Visual of the Gator in the bed on truck. Don’t just measure the bottom of your box. Measure the top also. I had to take my roll up cover off since it was too narrow with it on. I learned the hard way after cracking both fenders on it
October 1, 2010 at 10:39 pm #87379As you can see, I had no problem putting my Sportsman 700 in my ride for the weekend…

The pic is a 2011 Chevy Avalanche from the Chevy web site, looks like the back window still does fold down.
