What Outerwear would you buy?

If you had a budget of say $300 roughly, what outerwear would you buy for bowhunting? Would you get lighter weight carbon Coat and Pants (like perhaps the Scentblocker Brotherhood Coat and Pants) and then just layer underneath when it get cooler? Or, would you go with something a bit heavier and made for the elements more ( like, say the Gamehide Monster Coat and bibs)and then take extra care to keep them clean and as scent-free as possible.

I used those two examples because I can get a fair bit off on either of those options at my local shop and be right around 300 bucks with tax. I am not set on those two options, just the examples I used.

I am leaning towards the carbon option, but want to be able to stay warm at anytime during the season with one set of Outerwear.

I have both, but find I wear my heavier stuff more. For early season, quite honestly, I like the came hoodies and pull overs. The most important thing to me is #1 don’t sweat in either case and be comfortable enough to sit all day

I’ve always been a huge fan of layering. Of course I despise sitting and do a ton of spot and stalk.

Outer Layer: Wool. Sleeping Indian Design.

    Inner Layer from outside in:

    1. Fleece Jacket, Fleece Pants (If sitting) No Pants if stalking.

    2. Mock Turtle shirt (cotton)

    3. Any type of wicking under material. (Underarmor).

Obviously that’s if sitting and it’s cold out. I’m usually hot, so I tend to shed a layer or two. I’ve really liked the fleece. It’s warm, light, and quiet.

I have yet to field test Gamehides Monster Jacket and Bibs but knowing the History of these garments, I know for a fact these are the Ultimate cold weather gear. The new age waterproof bonded fleece is extremely quiet and no doubt the quietest most effective rain gear on the market. Add in the Heat Tech Inuslation that regulates your body temp you will able to sit all day in this gear. Throw in Gamehides Freedom Sleeve and no doubt this is the Ultimate Bow Hunters Dream.

IMO, you need to take the same precautions to keep the Monster Cltohes clean as you do the Carbon Clothing!

A couple things mentioned was layering, and Gamehide’s Freedom Sleeve. All other clothes will bind when layered. The Gamehide Freedom Sleeve is cut in such a way that it offers maximum un-impinged movement. Want proof? Wear a sweatshirt into Dick’s, Cabela’s or anyone selling Gamehide and other brands. Try them on and go through the bow drawing motion. If you are lucky enough to have the Gamehide Rain gear, you already know this.

    Brad,

I got the Gamehide Ridge series. I wanted something that gives me the extra warmth, but the product had to be waterproof and quiet. I’m a wind in the face kind of hunter, so the carbon clothing wasn’t high on my list of needs.

I’ve been out of the hunting thing for several years now. Sadly, last year I found out all my camo clothing had hanger shrinkage. When I started shopping I knew I’d look at Gamehide’s products, but didn’t know I would find everything I needed from one manufacture. I’m on a budget as I suspect we all are. Gamehide meets my needs not only from a product and cost perspective, but the customer service is top notch. My fishing and hunting clothing is now primarily Gamehide(got a couple pieces I need to pick up yet).

Top it all off, they are a great sponsor here at IDO and if I can help keep the lights on at both places, awesome.

    Have fun shopping!!

Not one of the options you listed but the Scentblocker dream season pro jacket has a zip in wool liner that would allow you to wear it a little later into the season than the brotherhood coat. I wear mine almost all year but my furnace runs a little warmer than most

That would be a great option that would be somewhat flexible as far as how long of a season I could get out of it

Both companies make quality products but I would go with the Gamehide. They seem to be built tuff. The only knock I’ve got with Scentblocker is there products don’t last and
tend to rip and Also they come with the price tag.

well not to ruffle any feathers here but IMO: carbon suits and just don’t work. They may work in the sense that the hunter has confidence, but save your money and buy good quality clothing like Gamehide. Buy large enough to layer underneath and hunt the wind.

I get cold; nothing worse than dreaming of hunting all week long and then sitting in the stand an hour, getting cold and then can’t wait to leave! My goal this year is finding something I can stay warm in and still shoot my bow. I used to be a big fan of the carbon based clothing, but that has wained. Don’t rule out the Predator line or Hidden Wolf Woolens if warm is an issue.
