After I read this article, I asked myself, Would you take the chance of breaking the law to dispatch this animal yourself if you knew the PD wasn’t coming for several hours?

The hunter in me says kill it and drive away. I can’t ethically stand by and watch any animal suffer. But given the way our laws are written, do I dare take the chance that someone would turn me in and I’d be charged with shooting a deer out of season?

O.K guys, let me have it! What would you do in this situation?

In my opinion, there is only one right thing to do in this scenario. There is the letter of the law and spirit of the law.

I always have a knife in my door and a tire iron in my truck, it sound brutal but what’s worse than sitting there watching it suffer!

I’ve had to snuff a few fatally-injured critters in my life. Nothing should have to suffer like that. Sometimes you have to stand up and do the right thing.

Snuff, leave, and if need be, present your case to the judge.

I really don’t give a hoot what the letter of the law says – right and wrong are easier to identify IMHO.

X2, recently traded in our vehicle and putting everything in the new one and my wife asked why do I need 2 hunting knives in the door of the truck, I said you don’t want to know but nothing needs to suffer.

I agree completely. End the suffering asap. Been there and done that. Although the location of the incident would certainly weigh heavily on the method used.

From times past we have hit a deer on the trap line, it was suffering and we were not sure what to do as it was on a main busy road with no houses around, we called the local law enforcment decribed the situation and asked for permision to dispatch the animal with my trap line pistol. either was we were going to dispatch the deer and throw an entesive havest bow tag on it and take it home, no sence in letting a deer go to waist. the law enforcment was totaly fine with us taking care of it in that way.

I can add that I saw several Woodbury “officers” standing around a traumatized car hit deer one time doing NOTHING and it infuriated me so much that I yelled out the window at those no-good SOB’s.
It was outside of town and clear shooting.

i carry an aluminum bat in the back seat of my truck.( i like to keep a little distance between me and a crippled animal)
just last fall i was on my way down to weaver for a day of work at deer camp. just north of lake city i came across a car deer acsident, the car that hit the deer was parked on the right hand shoulder and cars in the south bound lane had to go in to the north bound lane to go around the deer.
as i got closer i could see the deer was still alive, i pulled over, grabbed my bat and went back to see if the guy in the car was ok. he said he was and that he had called the athorities but the lake city police station didn’t open until 8:00 so he had to call 911. so there we are standing on the shoulder of highway 61 at 7:30 on a saturday morning, me with a bat in my hand so i said to him “i don’t know if you want to watch this or not” and i walked out to the deer to dispatch of it. it only took a couple of well placed strikes and it was over, i then dragged the deer to the side of the road and asked the guy if he needed a ride any were. the front of his car was totaled. he lived in frontanac and was on his way to work i think he said he was a mail man. his car still ran and was not leaking any fluids so he said he could make it home and jumped in his car did a u turn and took off, i got in my truck and drove away.

This is what I also do…. one time I hit a deer on Hwy 55, right along Lake Koronis… It hit my left front end, flew up, broke the windshield, flipped through the air and came down near the right rear, its legs dented the right side of my box… She got me on 3 sides I got my knife and walked down into the ditch where she lay… I grabbed an ear and lifted her head….Immediately she got up and pulled her head free and ran off She wasn’t even limping I didn’t even get any venison, but at least she wasn’t the one suffering… I was

I can recall at least two that I have dispatched with a quick blow from a 3-cell maglite. No critter deserves to suffer. All deserve to be put down as quickly and humanely as reasonable.

Call in and ask an eta…if too long advise you will kill it …their may be a discharge fire arm law in city limits but officers have discretion..with all the hiring freezes throughout the state and local police the call times are just going keep increasing and the non priority calls like this one keep getting pushed to the bottom….No one wins

I like the quote about having a whole county to cover. I see Winona co. sheriffs all the time doing nothing but driving around in their nice chevy trucks. Can’t imagine there was too much going on that day in Winona Co.

My wife and I were driving home one night and ran into a deer lying alive in the center of the road, and we almost hit it. We turned around and another passerby also stopped. We almost get hit by an idiot in a truck, so the other guy grabs the doe by the ears and drags it off the road….the doe turns it’s head and bit him in the wrist. The tire iron then came out and game over. We called the CO and this dude took the deer. Definitely dispatch the animal in some fashion.

put that deer out of misery and let the sheriffs department know about the situation. i’m sure they will understand why you did it your own way. nothing should have to suffer waiting for the sheriff to come out and shoot it.
