Here’s my plan. I have a generator to run my new cabin, but don’t want it to run 24/7 so I also want to run a small battery pack hooked up to an inverter to power some light loads, lightbulbs, fan, little tv use sparringly.

I want to use 2 or 3 Optima blue tops hooked up in tandem to an inverter. My generator will be used to power a 2/3 bank onboard charger to recgarge my batteries when needed.

How do I do this? I have an idea, but would like some opinions please.

I would recommend putting in a switch so you can switch between batt#1 batt#2 ar both. When there hooked in tandem a weaker batt will bring down the good one. This may not be a problem at first, but if one batt gets weak later it will kill em both with little or no warning.

You could put in a transfer switch. Transfer between commercial power (in your case a generator) and your battery backup. The generator can also charge your batteries. I would go the extra step and set up a solar charger too so your batteries always stay charged. A solar warming pad for the batteries isn’t a bad idea either. I know batteries are fine in the cold but thats only when they are properly maintained. For the price of the optima’s, I would go the extra mile. I would think with the new HE bulbs and LED lighting you could have all the light one would want with extra juice for the radio, TV, maybe even a blender for the wife’s fruitie drinks.

    something like this
