Putting in electric is turning out to be more of a headache and out of budget than we thought. I;m thinking of going the generator route. The cabin will be 24×24 mostly running a few lights, tv, coffee pot. Anybody have any input or recomendations?

I bought a used 4k onan from a motor home and love it. I have it wired so i start it from inside my cabin. I also have a 24 volt inverter with a charger built in. With 6 batteries I can easily go a full weekend without running my generator. I know of a used 4k onan for 350.00 pm me if you are interested and i will give you the info.

I would get a honda, they are so quiet and would be great for an ice house as well.

For those of you who use batteries and a generator combo, are there any other battery options besides deep cycle? I’d like to have a series of batteries for a few lights, coffee pot in the morning and very limited tv use. My cabin will be fully wired. I’d like to be able to charge my batteries with the generator when needed and not run the generator continuously. Whats the best way to do this?

I believe Brad has this set up. Hopefully he will chime in soon on how it works.

Ok, after a little research, here’s my plan. I’m going to run 3 Optima blue tops as a battery bank with a 3 bank on board charger as the charger. The cabin(according to my electrician) will be wired for future electric from the coop someday but will also be wired to be able to run juice from my battery bank. The generator will be able to be plugged into the wall and used directly, bypassing the battery bank when needed. For charging batteries, I’ll be able to use the 3 bank charger powered by the generator. Sounds easy, I still don’t get it.

I believe the fuse box, will have a cord, that plugs into your generator. When the generator is on, it will power the cabin as well as the 3 bank charger, there by charging the 3 batteries. When the generator is shut off, then the power will be supplied by the 3 batteries and an invertor. The electrician will wire it so that it all works seamlessly.

Ever consider propane lights, stove, frig? They worked well for our cabin on an island years ago.
