bigfife,
I like Rocky boots. I have had several pairs of them and they have worked great. I saw at Cabelas that they have a pretty good sale going right now on them. The Rocky Corn Stalkers and Rocky Bear Claws, and others. Check them out.July 29, 2010 at 6:23 pm #84013Quote:
I haven’t found anything better than the Danner Pronghorns.
X2, they even have come out with a new improved design this year. Fife haven’t we had this discussion before? I believe they have the toe gaurd now, that you were worried about.
July 30, 2010 at 1:14 pm #84047Ok you guys with the Danners, how do you make them last?
I’ve had mine for 2 hunting seasons and they are shot. I oil them probably every other trip, which seams rediculous, and the leather is still all wore out. The seams have ripped in multiple places as well and now leak water everywhere. They were comfortable though. Did I just get a couple lemons?
July 30, 2010 at 5:05 pm #84081I have had a pair of Rockys for I don’t know how long and they are just about to get replaced by another pair of Rockys… I oiled mine the first time and may be once after in the 15-ish years that I have had them and they are still working real well. I just need to get something not as slippery in the sole area and I am having problems with my arches, so a new pair is in order.

If you wear out danners in two seasons you will wear out rockys in a couple of months.
Danners all the wayAugust 2, 2010 at 3:28 pm #84211How long have you guys had your Danners? Do you oil them alot? Did the toe wear out? Did the seams rip apart?
The Pronghorns were comfortable, but I just really have a bad taste in my mouth after the last pair. Especially considering the previous pair was a pair of $75 Rockys that made it 8 years including during college when I made it out 4-5 times/week.

I would say nothing against the Danners as I have never had a pair, but your experience with Rocky’s is the same as I described. I think you answered your question!!!

My last pair of Rocky’s lasted forever also. I can’t speak to the Danner’s as I’ve never had a need to buy anything but Rocky.
August 18, 2010 at 12:57 pm #85556I ended up buying a new pair of Danner Pronghorns. The boots have a toe guard now, so that should fix the bulk of the problems I had with them. I found them on sale at Game Fair and pulled the trigger.
Now is it October yet?

Me Too!! I have Pronghorns and they are great but I want a great pair of UN-insulated boots for grouse/pheasant hunting. I know Browning has been making them for years and Cabelas has their name on some but I would like to hear some real-life experience.

Try them again Dan,
Danner has improved them greatly. This years version all have triple stitching now, along with a heel and toe guard.Ron
August 26, 2010 at 11:25 am #72746Danner Pronghorns X4. They have a 6″ uninsulated boot thats good for the field.Tried several brands but others dont last as long or as comfortable.
neusch303Posts: 539August 26, 2010 at 11:54 am #72747I would seriously NOT consider the Danner Pronghorns. The quality was fine, but the sole is junk. In tall grass without snow, they are fine. In shorter grass or no grass (stepping on logs, rocks, yard grass, etc) with snow, they are like stepping on hockey rink ice. Extremely slippery. I threw mine in the closet after a late season day and never looked back.
I love my Danner Canadians and Elk Hunter series boots. I see they don’t make the Elk Hunter anymore but that Grouse series looks interesting.
* I should disclaim that I am a huge fan of the Bob Sole and it’s traction. I don’t think any other sole has anywhere near the traction of the Bob Sole design. So perhaps I felt any slippage in the Pronghorns was unacceptable. They were really slippery though, not just a little.
neusch303Posts: 539August 26, 2010 at 11:58 am #72741As far as making them last. I would contact Danner. My Canadians are 4 years old and been to hell in back (Canadian Rockies chasing Moose). My Elk Hunters are 7 or 8 years old and hike the Chalk Buttes in Montana every year without fail. They are still highly functional without flaws.
Dad’s Canadians are around 15 years old and still an excellent boot.
