Here’s a link to Jolly Ann Marine. Doc Sampson’s video on understanding sonar is a great video that will help beginners and even expierenced fishermen better understand sonar readings.

Labman, I forgot to mention that Doc’s video would be helpful for owners of any brand of sonar.

    Ben,
Thanks! That is exactly what I was looking for! I was afraid that Doc’s DVD’s were geared too much toward operating Lowrance units rather than sonar in general! After reading the descriptions, the one I purchased (the understanding sonar one) was perfect! I can’t wait!

I’ve got a couple of Doc’s DVDs, they’re very good.

The Part 1 is geared to operating your Lowrance and demonstrating the useful features. Everything is in the manual but the DVD is much easier to learn with.

If your transducer is mounted on the transom the transducer “sees” a cone shaped area under the transducer. If you are moving in a straight line and see the beginning of the fish arch on the right side of the screen, that fish is probably somewhere in front of the transducer which could be right under the middle of the boat. The far right side of the sonar screen is what is in the cone, the rest is a picture of the history of what you have passed over.
