I’d call this a pretty solid photo of a fisher. (1st pic)

    yes / no???

Second pic is a fisher from my bear bait last year for comparison.

Not much else has a tail like that. Pretty destinctive black/brown color.

That is what I was thinking too. I had a picture of one and thought it was a Pine Martin. Clarification would be nice!

So, to muddy the waters a bit more. Are these also known as wolverines? That’s what we called them when we saw them in the Black Hills. One viscous animal I wouldn’t want ticked at me.

If I remember right, Pine Martens are alittle bit smaller than a fisher. I asked a bear guide awhile back. Gonna do some research.

Pine martins are NOT the same as a fisher. Wolverines are also entirely different animals. Fishers are bigger, maybe twice the size as a pine martin. Martins look like black weasels more than anything. Around EC, we have some fishers, but zero pine martins, at least that I have ever heard of. There might be a few in the far nort’ part of WI, but not here. Wolverines are also not around here, although we do have badgers.

All very cool animals, but I wouldn’t want to corner any of them.

In Newfoundland last week I had a pine martin 1 foot away from me in my treestand. He came up the tree to investigate. VEry cool, they are fun creatures to watch!! I have some (poor quality) video, but haven’t gotten it up on youtube yet.

    Cheers!

Video of a pine martin from last week. (Sorry, really bad video, it climbed my tree to take a peek from 1 foot away – I had a hard time tracking it and working the camera) Neat encounter, nonetheless!! This video was a few hours prior to my shot on the bear…

Yeah, I read that in your post When I told him what I saw, the outfitter said it was a patch fox & that I should have shot it…. he said if I did, I would be considered a GOD by the native Indians …. like I wasn’t already….

Pine Martins are cute and curious and have shades of gray. Fishers are like ticked off otters on land and wolverines …well they are just mean, like x wife or mother in law mean.

When we used to trap alot fisher got the upmost respect. Fishers are cunning enough they would play dead in the a leg hold until you got close enough and they knew just how far the chain would reach. My grandfather took a good hit on the leg from one. Ya know what fishers eat? Porcipines! They are quick enough and smart enough to get the underside of a porcipine opened up in short order.

Now to really throw it we have cross foxes up here, we actaully have one tanned out. Pretty cool with the cross going across the shoulders and down the back.
