I just got off the phone with my cousin from SD. He’s more of a brother than cousin to give you an idea how close we are. He invited me to head to Alaska with them this summer for a week of staying on an enormous boat and all the fishing a guy could ask for. They did this two years ago. Dan is far from a fisherman, but he said it was a blast. My only cost will be my plane ticket from MSP to Ketchikan. The time frame is the end of June.

Alaska has been on my hit list forever. Well, this is probably the cheapest opportunity I’ll ever get. It’s also with family/friends who I don’t get to see nearly often enough. However, it’s gonna force me to cut back on some other trips/plans for 2010.

I’m really torn. I’ve got time to think about it, but not a lot. I know, tough problem to whine about. Would like any advice you guys have to offer.

I would say if you can do this trip for a few hundred that normally would cost thousands of dollars. And give up a trip at full price which you can take anytime at that price. Then go for it. If its on your wish bucket list do it now before its too late to enjoy it. just my 2 cents.

Your 2010 plans/trips can be rescheduled next year or the year after. A trip to Alaska with a best friend will always be remembered.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT PASS THIS UP! Everybody needs to see this place in their lifetime. I actually fished out of there too. Although if you are restricted to a boat for your entire trip you’d be missing out alot of sites too.

I guess home is on a couple 60 foot + boats. They each tow around a 20′ fishing boat.

Well, I have two hurdles to overcome. 1. Vacation time at work. We are taking a week in Feb for a family vacation. Which doesn’t leave a lot of time for sick kids the remainder of the year. I miss at least 1 week for kids. 2. Backing out on quite a few annual trips. I’ve committed to several trips for the year and it’s gonna require I back out on them. I feel pretty cruddy doing that to my buds.

John if you explain why to them I bet they would understand and you would be giving them plenty of notice, I bet they would do the same if they had the chance and you would understand that they should not pass on an opportunity like that.

Not to mess with your head, but, as temping as any trip to Alaska would be, (it’s on my bucket list for sure), IF it isn’t the trip to do what you’ve dreamed to do, then I wouldn’t go until I could do what I wanted to, and where I wanted to do itwhoa, I know, tough call. But if the trip has in it what you wanted to do and perhaps more, I’d sell my truck to get a plane ticket to go and explain to others the what’s and why’s and I’m sure they’d understand. and good luck>you’ll make the right call

That’s great advice Flatfish! This trip will definitely encompass part of my wish list for Alaska. It’s primarily halibut fishing, which I’ve always wanted to do. However, it will also help to potentially fill a life long dream of an archery hunt for caribou. The guys hosting us are avid hunters, so I’m hoping to make some contacts for a future hunt.

At this point, I’ve had to make some promises to the war department that will keep me busy the remainder of the year. However, it’s worth it since I actually like working on my house.

Our last major hurdle will be finances. If we don’t go to far over budget at Disney in two weeks, I’m going.

Kooty, I know you’ll make the right call…..like I said, did mean to mess with your head any. If and when my chance comes, I think I’ll be gone for about 3 weeks! Alaska is really my ‘dream’ trip. Good luck!

Is this really a question or do you already have your ticket to Alaska purchased and you are just messing with us? “GO WEST YOUNG MAN”.. WELL NW actually.

I would say unless any of your other 2010 trips are on your list , or can’t be put off for a year I would be checking flights.
