RUSHFORD, Minn. — There’s no such thing as a 10-pointer in basketball, but the Rushford-Peterson boys team got one after their game Monday night.
A school bus carrying the varsity team slammed into a 10-point buck on the drive home after Rushford-Peterson’s victory over Spring Grove. The collision did minimal damage to the bus but killed the deer.
Coach Tom Vix and others then loaded the more than 200-pound buck into the back of the bus.
“It was a big trophy buck,” Vix said. “The poor thing made it all through the hunting season, and it loses it to the bus.”
The trip home Monday night had already been delayed when the bus stopped to assist a car that had slid into the ditch. The driver, a team fan, was so shaken by the incident that an assistant coach volunteered to drive the vehicle back to Rushford, Vix said.
The school bus was following the car on Hwy. 43 north of Mabel, Minn., about 10:30 p.m. when the buck ran into the road. It didn’t stand a chance.
Vix said he didn’t want to leave the animal there for two reasons:
it was near a driveway and he knew it wouldn’t be there for long. He called a local conservation officer.
“I know my kids,” Vix said. “They’re all hunters. They would all drive back to get that deer.”
His players could hardly contain their excitement, he said, snapping photos of the animal and swapping hunting stories.
The bus soon had to stop again when the car that earlier had slid into a ditch ended up with a flat tire. Vix returned with his wife and the car’s owners about 12:30 a.m. to fix the tire, he said.
“It was a long night,” Vix said.
The damage to the buck made the venison unusable, he said, but the impressive rack will be mounted by a local taxidermist for free and given to the high school.
