Here is a nice buck a guy I used to hunt with back in Medford, Wi shot Sunday night. Check out his high tech archery equipment. He once shot a buck during rifle season and didn’t have his knife with him so used the pin of his back tag to gut it out. (Man Vs. Wild)

YOU WANTED ALL THE DETAILS SO HERE GOES! quite the afternoon. i had crabclaw on camera last night at 340 by a new stand i put up. i was itching to go today as i needed a west wind but it was beckys birthday so i thought we’d go out for supper. she and taylor decided to go shopping in marshfield so after the first quarter of the packer game i was up in a tree. it was very hard getting to the stand as the snow was so darn loud but i kept stopping every thirty seconds or so trying to sound like a deer (like that ever works lol) . got to the stand at 230 and about an hour later does, fawns, and a few mediocre bucks started coming across the beaver pond. they were really spooky because of the crusty snow but one buck , a doe ,and two fawns fawns settled in and were eating. a while later a 9 point came in with a few more fawns following. they played the usual game of ring around the rosy and only the two bucks were eating and the does and fawns were standing around the food plot browsing.

they all looked to the south and i could see 2 big deer coming down the hillside heading for the foodplot. it was about 200 yards but i could see nice antlers on both of em. they skirted the edge of the pond in the thick stuff and stood about 60 yards away and just watched for 5 minutes or so. then they came across the plot and stared and stared . finally the bigger one (crabclaw) committed and was eating 15 yards but quartering towards me. the other buck that was with him was the 11 point i seen earlier this year and passed on. he looked pretty nice with the snow background. 10 minutes later i’m still up there without a decent shot. still quartering towards me. one of the does gets downwind behind me and starts the stomping crap. i thought he’s gotta turn when he leaves and i should get a quick broadside shot. NOT! he turned really fast and starts walking away. i’ve got my pin on his [censored] just waiting for a shot and he turns broadside . PERFECT. i had the pin on his chest forever telling myself ” stay away from the shoulder blade!!! finally i shot and seen the arrow bury itself in the chest. half was sticking out yet. ( no pass thrus with my prehistoric bow. lol) he took off and made it about 150 yards and i seen him do a nose dive out on the beaver pond. nice. i climbed down and was waiting by the truck when blake got there to pick me up. he knew right away something good happened. drove back to medford to get a flashlight and a camera and to see if becky wanted to go out for supper.(i’m such a good boy) they weren’t back yet. thank goodness cuz i would have choked on my supper anyway!!! crabclaw was a little better than i thought . he’s got 13 points for sure and maybe 14. i haven’t measured him but i’m guessing 19 on the inside.

    ps . Shane,
You’ll probably never sell me a new bow ( this ones only 25 years old so it’s got a few good decades yet.) but the rage broadhead i bought this fall worked really good. never thought i’d see the day when i shot one of those damn things. technology , gotta luv it.

I asked him what kind of bow he shoots and this was his response; I’m not sure what model bow it is. Christopher Columbus brought it over on the Mayflower and never gave the name of the bow. lol Actually it is an old Martin Cougar Magnum. ( next year a recurve haha ) It was bought when Z still had the sportshop downtown. So it’s at least 26 years old. Congrats on your buck also. Thanks, Brian

Archery equipment has certainly improved technologically since the good old Martin Cougar Mag…but it doesn’t kill deer any more dead.
Up here in my neck of the big woods are several very good bow hunters that have killed big bucks for years with old bows like that…and still use them.
That model is only 65% Let Off and slings aluminums pretty darn well… as we can see!
