    # The first large-scale North American banding program was established in 1922.
    # To date, about 16 million waterfowl have been banded in North America, including about 13 million ducks.
    # Biologists band more than 200,000 ducks and nearly 150,000 geese and swans in North America each year.
    # About 85,000-90,000 bands are reported each year.
    # To date, most duck banding efforts have focused on mallards. The mallard is the most commonly banded and most commonly harvested duck in the United States and Canada. Approximately 7 million mallards have been banded so far.
    # The oldest known waterfowl banded in North America was a Canada goose that lived to be 30 years and 4 months old. The oldest mallard lived to 26 years, 4 months.

#There are just not a lot of ‘cans’ that get banded. Year 2000, an 662,000 estimated ‘cans’ were in North America. And about one percent of those get banded throughout all the flyways. So a banded ‘can’ is a rare bird band.:(

i have never gotten one but know a guy who has. i think the fact that there isnt many, the fact that most people dont ever shoot them, and the difficulty of catching them to band, is the reason there isnt many shot. they just dump corn where ever they want to band mallards and rocket net them. i imagine the only way to catch cans is to get the hens or the ducklings before they can fly. anyone else know how to catch divers to band?
