Not sure if this has been posted or if it’s even legit. But, this came into my email earlier today.

    Quote:

Pictures from a DNR raid on St. Martin’s Island off of the U.P. on Nov. 19th, 2009. 31 Bucks and 9 Does on the pole, nothing smaller than a 7. Approx. 10 deer antlers, and heads found around the camp. Also, a smaller mix of bucks and does… 10 deer without tags, another 10 with wives/girlfriends tags.

If this actually legit….what an abuse of our resources. Like you, I don’t have any details on this….so its all speculation. But how dare anyone abuse our resources this way.

I just think this has to be ‘photo-shopped’ as the antlers look to much alike on to many of these boys…..Just don’t think I can buy into this one BUT, if this is true, I hope to see another pix of a few guys hanging there soon

There are two St. Martin Islands. One is located in the straights and the other one by the Garden Peninsula. Both look to be very small. The island off the Garden Peninsula is only 2 1/4 miles by 1 1/4 miles. Hard to believe there are that many deer on an island that small.

Look to be real and the story is 1/2 true Im thinking..its some serious management of deer according to one of the hunters in the link..They were culling all mature 8 point bucks in order to get more 10 etc in the gene pool. Check out the link thats a lot of deer from one island if it is as small as your saying Brad…..

This is a true story…was on the Outdoor radio show and a blurb in the local papers up north.

The larger islands in northern Lake Michigan have no predators such as the (Apostle and Beaver islands) and the deer populations absolutely skyrocket. Some of these guys bought the St. Martin island several years ago and started managing it for bucks.

Rumor has it that they made big drives with wives etc toward standers on the downwind shores for a week and ended up shooting lots and lots of deer.

If they all had “Combination” tags they are allowed 2 bucks each…one 3 pts per side and one 4 pts per side.

Had they tagged all the deer immediately there would have been no poaching violations. But they didn’t.

In Mich you need to tag a deer within 15min of recovery.

Beaver Island is not much bigger than St. Martins and a few years ago they opened it up to a culling (public) hunt and killed about 100 deer over a weekend. Yup…the deer on islands can reach staggering numbers if there is enough browse and temperate weather for a few years…and NO Predators.

St.Martins is like a Deer Farm…There is one about 30 miles from here (Superior Game farm) that is 1,600 acres,(40 acres by 40 acres) with over 200 hundred deer, several Elk and Sheep and many Russian Boar. They do feed them alfalfa etc…as supplement, but that a lot of critters in 1600 acres!

Not sure what to make of this??? A law is a law is a law. Sounds like these guys sorta figured they were in their own little world.

By the looks of the meat pole it is a pretty common accurance. Who else would have 40-50 feet to hang deer on.

Currently I only needed 12-18 inches to hang my one doe.

Something I find odd from RVRAT’s link. The photo w/ the hunters and the DNR agents on the right show the hunters and the agents smiling . Now if the agents went in there and handed out a bunch of fines then why would they all line up for a group photo like that (and smile…) ??? Something is not right on this… RR

    Rooster you are correct.

The island is owned by the ODAWA Indian’s, since it is reservation land, laws do not apply as normal.

The deer were all legal with the exception of the ones that did not have the tags properly affixed. The group received 10 citations for improperly tagged deer. No arrests were made and no deer (or other items) were confiscated. There is even a very nice picture of the group posing with the COs’ in front of the deer poles…smiles all around.

Here’s the part that’s really going to drive you guys nuts: All those bucks were cull bucks! That’s right, the group has spent the last two years culling out inferior mainframe 8’s.

I read that too. What I don’t understand is how they think these are inferior bucks??? They will never grow any bigger, that is for sure.

Kooty, like everything there is different beliefs in Management. Some people believe 8’s are inferior to the 10’s and will Cull all Mature Eights out. I myself love big 8’s.

I hear you guys. Big 8’s are awesome. Everybody has their own boat to float per say. I’d like to see this place in a couple more years….

Thanks for the research Les… I’m sure this event was down played by our DNR because they are desperately trying to reach an agreement with the Tribes right now over the Bays de Noc Walleye/Salmon fishery.
The Odawa may sell/grant hunting access to anyone they choose. The Odawa do NOT need a license…

The plot thickens on this one…This is smaller St. Martin’s island in Delta cty south of the Garden Peninsula…

    Re; St.Martin’s Island

The DNR raided St. Martin’s Island (south of the Garden Peninsula in
Delta County). Most of the deer were illegally shot and/or tagged. The smallest buck was a 7 pt. 31 Bucks and 9 Does on the pole, nothing smaller than a 7. Approx. 10 deer, antlers, and heads found around the camp, also a smaller mix of bucks and does…
10 deer without tags, another 10 with wives/girlfriends tags (illegal).
Fines and penalties will be substantial…
