Welcome to IDO I will use a doe in heat scent and will use mostly soft doe bleats, not the loud buck growls…typically, it is never more quiet, than it is when muzzle loading… the leaves are down, the squirrels are done gathering and maybe even a layer of snow, to amplify the little bit of sound there is. Good luck

Don’t leave home w/out your grunt tube. I can honestly say I’ve had great success bringing in some nice bucks in closer for a clean kill with my true talker and my buck roar for louder grunts w/out seizing up the reed on windy days during the ML season. Can’t say I do much blind grunting though just more sitting being silent.

Never leave home is right! One of my biggest bucks fell to the muzzleloader and that guy was dogging every doe that was out in the field and it was Dec. 2. He was grunting up a storm as he chased the does. Luckily for me I had 3 does come out at 30 yards and he came running so there was no need for me to call, piled him up at 15 yards with the Knight super disc .45 cal!

    Welcome to IDO jbartkowicz!

I agree with the others above. Grunting can be very effective during the late season. However, I only use it as a last resort and do not call blindly. Not saying that it can’t work blindly but the last thing I want to do is grunt to a deer who is already approaching my shooting area. I use the grunt tube to reposition the direction of the approaching buck. If I know he is walking in a direction that is not going to offer me a shot, I will try to redirect him into range. There are a ton of grunt tubes on the market. The one thing I look for is to make sure the ground tube has volume. Usually conditions aren’t perfect when you encounter a buck and want to use your grunt tube. It may be windy or the buck may not hear you because of the loud rustling of the leaves. You can always tone down your grunt tube by cupping your hand but you can’t make a low volume grunt tube louder.

so what is everyone using for grunt tubes? I have tried primos, flextone, tru talkers, none seem to work real well and I always think the sound is way off. I mean yea they can stop a deer but i can do a mouth grunt without carrying something else. So what grunt tube do you rely on?

I shot 2 different 8 pt buck during the Gun season. I was blind calling with both a grunt call and the can call. Both bucks came in with their ear’s and nose up and were looking around for the source of the calls. I’m not sure which call they were responding to but I’m fairly certain they were both responding to the calls. I just started using the can call last year and really believe they it has made a big difference for me. The next 2 weeks the buck should be still chasing Does that were not breed during the rifle season so I’s think Both a grunt call and a can call should still be just as effective now as it was then. I know I plan to use both through the whole muzzleloading season. I thought more Doe’s would respond to the can call but I have yet to have a Doe come in to me while using it. They may be just to busy running from the bucks. I would really like to leave the rest of the Bucks alone ( Unless it’s a wall hanger ) and shoot me a nice doe during muzzleloader season. Good luck to everyone heading out this muzzleloader season. Be safe !!!
