I have two coworkers who have been asking me about hunting and maybe getting into the sport. One is interested in deer hunting during firearm season. The other is interested in waterfowl.

In explaining what gear they would need, it seems to me that I keep coming up with somewhere in the $500 to $1000 start up cost.

    -clothes (boots, layered clothing, etc.)

    -weapon

    -licenses

    -accessory gear (Waders, blinds, etc.)

Even if you slim it down to the basics. They still need a weapon, clothes, practice (rounds and time), and licenses. They are complete city boys, so they really do not have any gear.

Does this sound about right to you guys?

It seems the prices are about right depending on the quality of gear they go after.

I had to laugh, the waterfowl guy wanted to get into that sport because he thought it was easier and cheaper.

It’s amazing the perception (no matter how incorrect) stories and pics will give.

I didn’t even want to mention field decoys. I figured that’s beyond a beginner. Unless you are an 18 year old and on a “team”.

Yeah no kidding have you seen the prices on those 7′ high hairy decoys?????? Talk about a pain in the to carry in the field.

Yeah I would say $1,000. If he just gets clothes and gun. Just find a buddy with all the big foot decoys.

for the duck guy, point him to the cableas northern flight jacket… i think its on sale for $70… its insulated, dry plus, and noisy, but you dont have to be quiet for ducks.

remy 870 super mag and benelli nova are good starter shotguns, both are under $350.

toss in $200ish for waders and hes set.

Wade, no way! A decent firearm will run the $500-1000 alone and it seems I spend a couple hundo every year, so just tell them to be prepared to spend at least 2 grand if they want quality equipment

My old 150$ pump kills ducks and geese just as dead as my 800$ Browning auto loader.
Boots, on sale, neoprene, 100 -150$
    Good coat- 80 to 150
    Shells @ 20$ box average
    Licenses and stamps – about 50 ?

Good buddy with all the rest of the crap – boat, dog, deeks, calls, & place to go = PRICELESS !
