Took the truck for an alignment cause she pulled right a bit. $60 dollar quote turned into a $200 job. I was told ford pick-ups have rivets that have to be cut and shims installed to do the alignment. WTF? Anyone have any knowledge of this? BTW the truck is a 1996 4×4.

I’m guessing they are talking about install camber cams or wedges. Rivets are cut on the strut plates of FWD vehicles but not on the trucks.

We charge $40 for an alignment, cams run between $20-$40 each IIRC, and installation runs around $80 if everything comes apart decent. The reason this adjustment is made is to compensate for spring sag due to age. Sometimes they are sagged so bad you cannot get them back in specs without new springs. The shop doesn’t sound out of line.

Build it what way? The front end of a truck has to be able to move and movable parts will wear out. I don’t think it was a terrible design by any means. After all it was on the best selling truck the entire time it was employed.
