saw a 10 pointer and i grunted at him and he just looked and then i did it agian and he flagged me and hopped twice and then stopped. he then procced to the squash field to eat and then on return i rattled and he did the same flag hop and walked to the woods and off he went. then he came out and chased a doe and was gone in the dark. So my q is how to i approach this buck? any help would be awsome. Just so pumped to see this buck as the first buck i have every seen. also I saw 10 does and one other buck besides him. So for my first night was successful but no shots. what to do

I’d say you’re doing everything right as he didn’t completely spook as he was still there chasing a doe. Eventually he will react positively to what you’re doing. One day he may run to you and the next away from you just the way it is. Best of luck but don’t get discouraged

I agree with Coppertop..and you never know what mood the animal is in..maybe not ready for any confrontation yet…I think that its early to pound the antlers together yet but it doesnt sound like you did that..maybe a little rattle here and there…I would keep doing what has worked for you and as we get closer to the rut hopefully you can rattle him right in…I personally dont rattle where I hunt in Mn until I see the bucks chasing…not saying its right or wrong I just never had any luck and saw it scare deer away..on the other hand where I hunt in Wi there is a much better doe to buck ratio and I have tickled the rattling bag already and have had bucks respond…Good luck at stickin him ..cant wait to see pics …Jay

BINGO. you never know. I believe deer are often like people and carry certain personalities. I believe some deer will avoid confrontation all the time no matter the Rut timing. Some bucks are loaners and do not hang out with the crowd, while some are curious. Some bucks are fighters and some are lovers. Each buck is different and will react differently. just cause it did not work on one buck doe snot mean it will not work on another. I often start calling on a more subtle level then increase it from a less threatening matter like a doe grunt and work my way up to buck grunt, rattling and perhaps the most threatening is the snort wheeze. Once I have figured out what the majority of bucks are responding to, I adapt my calling to their reactions. I hope this helps.

Last weekend my brother and I was after the same buck for 3 days in a row. I seen him from my stand the first two days and he wouldnt come within shooting range. I called at him and tried rattling. Then the 3rd day I let my brother sit there and he seen him and made a couple grunts to him and he came running within 15 yards and he made a good shot. That buck was in a different mood that day. Keep doing what you are doin!

Sliding into the pre-rut to early rut season the Snort Wheeze is a killer on aggressive big bucks that normally won’t take the time of the day for a grunt tube.

The Snort Wheeze is my primary call and I normally due it by mouth, without using the tube/cone call you can buy.
