I am in the market for a gun safe (14+ guns), placement will need to be in one of our closets so size is going to possibly be an issue. What are the preferred brands out there? I also want this to have a decent fire rating as well.

Fire rating is great, don’t get me wrong but, also look to see if the safe is water and/or smoke proof/resistant (if you need to worry about fire you’ll have to worry about them too). Those two elements can cause just as much damage as the fire. There are so many good safes out there, but I would have to think that Liberty is towards the top. Good luck , see how much delivery is too, heavy SOB’s.

I should have mentioned the others (fire, smoke, water) but all the ones I have looked at with a fire rating have the others as well.

Liberty safes are very nice, how about the Sentry or Stack On one’s?

I just remember a house fire from a few years ago. Huge, really nice “Fire Rated” safe. When the homeowner opened it up, full of water and smoke damage . Maybe there all better now. I have looked at a lot of differnet ones, still haven’t pulled the trigger on buying though.

I hear you I have mine in my closet now, but with the kids getting older and the safety factor it is time I think as does the wife!

I bought a Champion Safe 2 years ago and it is one of the best investments I have made. There is a lot that goes into how a safe is built and the fire rating they actually have. There are a lot of companies that do their own ratings but very few that have an external source rate them. After all my looking and safe knowledge Champion was the best value for the money in my opinion.

I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A LIBERTY FATBOY SAFE 64 GUN. GANDER HAS IT ON SALE FOR 300 OFF AND I ALSO HAD A SCRATCH OFF WORTH 150 DOLLARS. GOT IT OUT THE DOOR FOR AROUND 1500. NORMALLY 2000. SEEMS GREAT SO FAR AND IT HAS A PLUG IN INSIDE FOR A DEHUMIDIFIER. KID PROOF AND PROTECTS

Back when G Dub was in office and gave us a real stimulus (refund) I was intent of getting gun vault. I had $600 to spend and began the search. I found a Canon AE-22 at a Dunham’s Sports. Cabelas sells this vault for around a grand. Dunham’s had it on sale for $500 and I got an additional 10% off for it being a floor model. Now when I went to pick it up the manager said “to heck with the floor model, this one is closer” and out I went with a NIB unit! The best part? Made in the USA. Has all the specs I need as far as fire rating and smoke protection (has a door seal that swells up). But water penetration is a feature I have not considered much less heard of. Time for some research.

Would I buy another Canon? Already looking for a steal as mine is slightly cramped already, lol.

Wade, I got one from Cabelas about 4 years ago. It is fire rated, but I mostly bought it for safety, so my guns wouldn’t be out in the open for prying eyes to see. I really don’t have any, that can’t be replaced, but a buddy told me, if your worried about fire… pull all that felt and padding out… that stuff will melt, in any fire and get all over your guns and belongings.

I have a 12 gun safe by Sun Welding I bought used from a friend several years ago for $400. I agree with Glen I also bought mine for safety, I do not believe in displaying my guns, if someone breaks into my house they are not getting my guns. I do not know how fire proof it is and I know it is not water proof but if something would happen that is what insurance is for.

I just had one delivered a week ago. I bought it from Cabelas but it is a liberty Cabelas Ambassador. Its the middle of the line safe as far as safes go. It was shipped by Liberty by a moving company out of the cities to my house. The two delivery guys and me managed to get it in the house despite it weighing about 900 pounds. I spent a fair amount for it but I was looking for the fire rating.

thanks everyone definitly more shopping and measuring to do to find where it will fit the best. The main reason I want it is for safety and security!
