Working on sighting in my daughters new .243 and after checking various ballistic and trajectory charts would like to know if I am understanding this correctly. We sighted in dead on at 25yds, so now we should be about 1.5 in high at 100 yds and dead on again at 200 with a 100grain bullet We then went into the woods to our stand and I placed water filled milk jugs around on stumps and logs ranging from 75-125 yds which are our typical shots and she blew up everyone so I think I’m feeling pretty comfortable with where it is

Excellent! I think I sighted mine in at 50 yards but am not sure. I may have done that to get “on the paper” and then tuned it at 100 yards. Been over a decade since making an adjustment to that scope or gun and it still kills with precision.

    Good job!

Personally I couldn’t be comfortable with that process. I would need to take it to the range but it sounds like your hitting milk jugs so I guess its ready for big game….

I HAVE BEEN BURNED BY THAT PROCESS ALSO. MY WIFES I SIGHT IN 1.5 HIGH AT HUNDRED AND SHE CAN HOLD DEAD ON OUT TO 200. BUT IF THE MILK JUGS ARE BLOWING UP IT MUST BE CLOSE!

I’d say that process is about the same as using a bore sighter in that it is meant to get you close and dial in from there. Like most things there are more than one way to do it. I like the three shot method myself. Bore sight if you’d like but not required. Set a target at 25/50 yards as described above. Place gun in Caldwell Lead Sled, adjust scope to dead center of target and fire. Assuming the sled is properly weighted it shouldn’t have moved. Without making any adjustments to the sled adjust windage and elevation so the cross hairs are centered where the bullet actually went. Now readjust to center of target and fire again. Should be all set. Take a shot at your desired yardage to recheck. I do this with my rifles and love the results.

we are actually sighted in on paper at 25, was mostly interested in if my calculations on an 1.5 in high at a 100 and on again at 200 were on line. the jugs were basically so she could get a feel for shooting in the woods and out of the stand before doing it for real I wouldnt be overly comfortable with just sighting in on jugs either It looks like up man is on the same page with me as far as at 100 and 200,

I would like a .243 in an AR platform. I love shooting my AR in .223 and accuracy, even on open sights, is deer worthy. Since I hunt in Wi using the .223 is not an option.

I would feel much more comfortable knowing exactly where I am hitting on a 100 yard target (or 200 yards even) with 3 to 5 shot groups and a solid rest, vs at 25 yards. Lots of room for error at that close of a range.

You might be right on (nice shots on the jug BTW), but the 100 yard range will let you know for sure.

If you are not in a shotgun only zone, I believe as long as it is a centerfire rifle it is legal to use a .223 or .22-250 I know a few guys who have started their kids out with these and then moved up as the kids got bigger, not sure what you mean by AR platform though

You were right. This from the Wi regs:
“It is illegal to hunt deer with any air rifle, rimfire rifle, or any center-fire rifle less
    than .22 caliber.”

Guess I can legally use my .223 though it would be hypocritical since I have always thought they were too small. I better stick with the ole ought-six.
