Can anyone point me to the section in the rules/regs handbook that describes the proper rules for transporting a deer killed from another state back in to MN.

I.E. I’m archery hunting in SD, if I happen to kill something, what rules must I follow to bring the deer back to MN for processing.

This is my first archery hunt in way too many years. I’m super pumped and can’t wait to get back home for this hunt.

In all the years we hunted out west, we never did anything different. Maybe we did something wrong , just make sure you following all of SD rules first. As long as there tagged and registered over there. I would think there isn’t anything you have to do here. Good luck, a big one.

After searching the 09 regs several times, I’m coming to the same conclusion. I may just dress/butcher and get it processed out there and pickup when I’m home for Xmas. I’m only getting an antless tag, but it’s still more hunting than I’ve done in a long time with my bow.

Kooty, I know when CWD was at its peak fever, they made it illegal to transport for little while… then they made you remove the brains or something like that… but I believe they quit that a few years ago…. I do believe they figure out they could actually “walk” over state lines by themselves

Every state has a little different on the rulings
Better check them all so make sure you comply it would be a bad thing to have a good hunt only to get in trouble by crossing the wrong state line

I live in MN and hunt SD every year. Shoot em, butcher em, and have them processed in SD. The cost of processing is about 50% of what I have found in the Twin Cities. I highly recommend Castlewood Locker.

Easiest solution of all is out of sight in covered pickup bed.

We’ve always tried to NOT look like hunters when coming back into the state. No gear showing. Defiantly no antlers showing. Don’t take a decaled up truck or trailer. That way they’ll stop the young punks with their stickers and deer tie up to show off.

That and come into the state on a highway/interstate other than 94, 90, 35, 2, etc.

Kooty, what I would do is Email Sue Rau at the DNR…. NO WAY would I try to “hide” my game, if it was illegal to do so….. I wouldn’t want to lose my priveledges for a few years

Of course I meant legally tagged.

I’ve decided IF I happen to stick a doe, I’m just gonna have it processed in SD. I know the laws out there very clearly. I’ll be back over Xmas this year and will be able to pickup the meat. I agree, not worth any potential problems.

I can’t wait for my pheasant/deer combo hunt.

I knew that Suzuki… I don’t think (or hope) nobody reads this as poaching deer… you never know though, with Kootys views on the subject I just mean if there certain criteria to transport across state lines, the DNR would know for sure

Thought I would share the reply I got from a gentleman at the DNR:

If hunting in one of the following areas in South Dakato:
    South Dakota
Counties of Fall River, Lawrence, Custer, Pennington, and Wind Cave National Park.(Which I’m not)
    Then you must follow:
    Carcass Import Restrictions
To help prevent the spread of CWD, hunters cannot bring whole cervid (deer, elk, moose, caribou) carcasses into Minnesota from areas of other states or provinces where CWD has been found in wild deer or elk. A list of known areas from which carcass import is restricted can be found at mndnr.gov or by calling the DNR information number (see page 127). From these areas, hunters may bring only the following parts into Minnesota:
    * Meat that is boned out or that is cut and wrapped (either commercially or privately)
*Quarters or other portions of meat with no part of the spinal column or head attached
    *Hides and teeth
*Antlers or clean (no brain tissue attached) skull plates with antlers attached
    *Finished taxidermy mounts
*Nonresidents transporting whole carcasses on a direct route through Minnesota are exempt from this regulation.

If NOT taken in one of those areas then:

    Transportation
*A legally registered animal may be transported any time during and after the deer hunting season.
*The licensee must accompany the deer in transport except as follows:
*A deer that has been registered may be transported by another person, if the signature, address, and license number of the licensee and the origin and destination of the transport are written on the back of the possession tag.
*All deer in transport must be readily accessible for inspection by DNR conservation officers.
*The head of a deer must remain attached to the carcass until the deer is registered. Skin and entrails may be removed before registration. Deer may be quartered before being registered, but the animal’s head must remain attached to one of the quarters.
*Whole deer, elk, caribou, or moose carcasses from other states or provinces may not be brought into Minnesota from areas known to have CWD in wild deer or elk. Normal registration and tags.

    good luck

What about from Wisconsin? That’s where I bring them from. Never even considered it an issue.

The same rules apply. Do you hunt a CWD area? If so, follow the top section(short of the SD specific info). If not, follow the bottom section.

One point I did clarify, we do not have to register deer killed in another state. One reason I’ll do everything I can not to transport the unprocessed meat back here is the rule about leaving the head attached to one quarter. I don’t want to deal with that bloody mess while traveling with my two young daughters.
