I just took a look at this seasons deer map and information! I cant believe what Lou Cornicelli and the other idiots at the department of natural resources have set for this year. You cant drive down any road in unit 245 where we hunt an not see tons of deer. One road I regularly check just three weeks ago my brother and i counted 24 deer in a 1 stretch. The road is ony one mile long. My brother works in Park Rapids and tells me all the time he sees between 20-50 deer a day and he only drives about 10 miles to town. Its time for changes at the dnr we need someone who knows how to manage a deer herd not this willy nilly management we have had under our current management. 4,000 doe permits give me break Lou.

IMO, these higher up DNR Posititons should be elected positions, not appointed/hired positions but that is my $.02.

The only problem with electing them, is that it becomes a personal popularity contest, rather than hiring the person with the best background/education and most experience in managing the herd. If you could somehow manage the list of candidates such that all had comparable biological experience, I think this might be a good way of going about it.

Before pointing too many fingers at Lou, why don’t you give him a call, or send him an email? He’s a very approachable guy that is very good at answering any questions you might have. In the past, he’s been very good about talking to hunters in open forums like this one, and is even willing to sign-on and offer his expertise from time to time. He’s always been prompt and pleasant with me.

You also have to remember these guys are under a multiple-use type framework, where they have to consider and try to appease the well-wishes of everyone with an opinion. That’s alot of people, from bird-watchers to die-hard hunters like ourselves. While I’d like to think my opinion is the only and most valid opinion, there’s other considerations to take in effect. I’m not calling anyone right, or anyone wrong, just suggesting that you take it up with Lou and the DNR!

Perch, with your permission, I’ll also inform him of this thread and offer him the opportunity to answer your questions/concerns on this forum. That way, we’d all benefit in hearing the reasoning behind his responses.

How is that any different then now Joel? You can not tell me the most qualified guy is sitting at the helm right now?

Yes, let the State list out candidates with their credentials and then let the public decide. To me QDM is a two sided Debate. Is QDM about Bigger Bucks or is it about a healthier larger population deer herd? This is a huge debate that I believe people are struggling with right now as there are people on both sides. To me it is a hybrid or combo of the two, but that is my opinion. Everyone is entitled to theirs.

I’m not saying Lou or the DNR is at fault here or did anything wrong. I just believe that a single appointed person with who knows what there credentials or agenda are should not have final say and control the whole Deer herd. Again just my $.02.

You’ll be even more sorry if the DNR opens it up and you dont see any on that stretch.

I think you’ll find we’re in agreement Rob. My only concern with a voting scenario is that you might tend to get the best politicians/administrators, and not necessarily the best biologists. However, seems like that job needs as much PR and Administrative prowess as it would biological genius.

Joel go ahead and talk to Lou. I guess the big problem I have here is that these game managers have no idea what shape the herd is really in. If these guys are going off kill stats from last year the numbers are really skewed because almost every day was single to lower double digit lows for temps in the mornings and about 25 or so for highs, which puts most guys back in camp early in the morning. We also had snow flurries and high northwest winds,so of course you will have a lower kill it is not because of low deer poulations.

It was not the DNR that made the changes this time around, see the same topic in THIS THREAD.
