OK picture this, you drive by a standing corn field that is just littered with trails and tracks everywhere, when we had snow anyway. You see plenty of “NO TRESPASSING” signs along this field and at the end of the landowners driveway. Would I be illegally trespassing if I drive down the driveway and walk up to the door to ask permission to shed hunt? If the guy is not so friendly I could possibly see a problem. What do you guys think???

I’ve actually done just that and lets say it didn’t turn out to well. I thought It would be acceptable to ask for permission but I was wrong. So just from my experience if their driveway is posted it may not be a good idea.

If you don’t ask you won’t know . Long story short, I wanted to hunt this one spot for years and was told the guy was a real A*% . well 7 years later I got the balls to ask him to hunt . Guess what I was the first person that has ever asked him and I’m still the only person hunting this spot 6 years later….

You could get a plat book of the area, find out who he is, get his phone number and give him a call. The worst thing he can tell you is no, and you are not tresspassing.

I do have his name and phone number so he will get a call from me on Sat. Just thought it’s better to meet face.

I would just pull up your skirt and go talk to the guy…

I agree with face to face. I also wouldn’t have him answer the door and say “Can I hunt your land ?” Introduce yourself, where you live, what caught your eye…. “No trespassing” and what your intentions would be. Sometimes, getting to know someone, even if they say NO, can pay off. When you see him in the Hardware store, say “Hi ……” I actually had it happen, getting permission a couple years later, under this scenario. Also, if you get permission, dropping off little gifts before going out (bottle of E & J and some Jerky in my case) might also help. You’ll never know, until you ask.

Face to face would seem to be the best way. But a guy can do both face to face and on the phone successfully. If you call first be quick to explain, as big g said, who you are, where you are from, and what your intentions are. But add this twist. Tell the landowner you saw the no trespassing signs and assumed he didn’t want to be bothered by someone barging up his driveway anyhow and wanted to respect his wishes by calling first. Do this properly and it is as effective as anything. In the end the worst they can say is NO. Good luck!
