Good tips Lenny. Need to get my self some de icer for the boat.

#1 Tip. Wear those life jackets. #2 wear those kill switches.

Just picked myself up a inflatable life jacket over the weekend so I can have a jacket to year full time on the water.

When you pull the boat out of the water be sure to pull the trailer up just far enough that it is out of the water then stop and let it drain before continuing up the ramp. This stops the draining water from icing up the launch. It is just respectful to anyone launching after you.

The one I quoted above is one of the most important, IMO.
There is nothing I hate worse than seeing someone drive their boat right up the ramp spilling water all the way and having it freeze instantly. At ramps such as Evert’s, it just defeats all the work Dean does to keep it ice free and ready for people to use.

Wow, great post! I really needed to hear this. I’d much rather stand in my boat than on ice, plus getting to cover more water.

Since I spend a fair amount of time fishing in this so called cold weather, I will add on a few tips to what Lenny already mentioned.

If you fell you really have to run your livewell you can do so. If you do be sure to do at least these 4 things. Pull livewell drain right after getting off the water. Run your intake pump for 30 seconds out of the water. Also run your recirculating pump (if you have one) for 30 seconds. That makes sure most if not all water is out of them. Once that is done, take a gallon of RV/ Marine antifreeze (the pink stuff) and pour down all livewell drains. That makes sure if there is any water left in the drain lines it will not freeze. Of course the safest way around this is to not use it at all like lenny mentioned, but it can be done.

If you have a bunk trailer that has carpeting on the bunks be sure to spray them with some type of de-icer when the boat is off the trailer. This is more so important so when you go to launch again you dont make others wait forever until your boat becomes unthawed from the trailer.

Have a good pair of water proof gloves with you. These are good for 2 things mainly. One is if anything falls into the water that you have to grab or if you dont have a net and need to grab a fish. They are also very nice to have if you plan on anchoring at all. You can wear these while pulling up the anchor rope so your hands dont get wet and freezing cold.

Be sure that your motor is spitting water. The water coming out the back is telling you that your water pump is working. If there is no water coming out the back you have one of two problems. One could be that your water pump isnt working (not good) or that your drain hose has been obstructed. Check the hose from where is comes out of the motor all the way to were is drains out the back and make sure there is no water froze in there. You can sometimes free the ice in there by pinching the hose with a needle nose pliers but be careful doing so, so you dont put a hole in it.

That is all I can think of right now, but I will add more if I think of them.

Good luck to everyone hitting the river soon, and hope to see you around

I have a cold water tip!!!

BRING LOTS A COOKIES TO EVERTS!!

    Guess that’s a fish catching tip…but important!

Very nice post Lenny and Eric!
99% of the folks I talk with about fishing open water give me the deer in the headlights look.

First they had no idea that there was open water in the winter and secondly, no idea that a person could catch fish.

    Great post!

The windshield deicer is a great idea for the trolling motor shaft. I have always had that problem.

    Thanks for the tips guys

I winter fish with a tiller main motor and tiller electric motor and only do two things to prepare my rig for winter fishing.

    1. I use my live well all year so I put duct tape around the edge of the live well cover so it does not freeze shut.

    2. Put a plastic shield around the electric trolling motor pivot teeth to keep spray (from the big motor) from icing it up. I just tilt (or swing) the trolling motor up when going from spot to spot.

Very good post Lenny….Some of us have learned some of these things the hard way, havent we?

One thing I would like to add for tiller boats,is to make sure the passengers are facing forward to be your second or third set of eyes.Yes it is more comfortable to have your back to the wind…..but I have witnessed some collisions because the passengers were blocking the vision of the driver.

    A couple additional suggestions…

    1. Wear your life jacket. Yea…I know Mike said this already but it is too important not to repeat.

    2. When you wear your life jacket, wear it under your outer coat. It will help keep you warmer. I have a neoprene one that has very good insulating qualities.

    3. Buy lots of hand warmers…they really work well.

    4. Follow the 20-10 rule…If it is under 20 degrees, make sure the wind is under 10 mph.

    5. Have fun!!!

    6. Wear your life jacket.

I use spray silicone on the t-motor shaft to keep it from freezing up. WD-40 will also work but attracts dirt/dust.

I don’t know what you are talking about Dean. My trolling motor has never froze up. If it did, I wouldn’t beat on it till it slammed into the water cutting my tranducer cable. (see my recent post for new locator advice ) By the way Dean, remind me to buy some de-icer before I put in on tuesday.

Awww, Thanks. I received a dozen maxima 350’s, some Flex Fletch “Flash” Vanes, and an archery scale that measures in grains. I was a fletchin fool last night. I have heard really, really, good things about these vanes and have become a little disappointed in the Blazers lately. They arent fletching very nice, are inconsistent in size and weight so we shall see what happens. How did you find my B-day?
