These people fishing in austin minn. they keep on talking about the mill pond! Is that in back side of the hormel plant (south side) because the location dont look anything like the old mill where the cedar begins, nor East side lake. if you or anybody else know’s drop a line
thanksFebruary 2, 2009 at 11:01 pm #205725Here are a few pictures of some heads I’ve had done by Kirk Peterson of Arkansaw, Wisconsin. He makes them look like they’re walking through the wall they’re so realistic. I added some pics of the eyes and throats so you can see the detail. He does show quality work for all of his customers.
February 2, 2009 at 11:40 pm #47190Yes he did. That’s really why I put these on here. Kirk is as good as they get in my humble opinion!
February 3, 2009 at 12:21 am #47194Very Nice! I just love the look of a big buck mounted during its rut. They look so real with it neck swelled.
How much does he charge for a deer shoulder mount? I am looking to get mine mounted this year but undecided where to get it done at.February 3, 2009 at 12:24 am #47195I agree Kevin, Kirk does a super job!
Now let’s talk about those good looking bucks! What are the stories behind those big boys?
February 3, 2009 at 3:48 am #47214I was thinking it would be a great idea to have one forum dedicated to taxidermy. For others to share there trophies with the rest of us. I dont know who you would talk to or who can do it but i think it would be sweet.

I believe he charges about $450.

I’m not sure who you’d have to talk to either. Maybe someone will jump on here and let you know. My fiance’s family are into taxidermy so they might like it as well. Makes it hard to go to your favorite taxidermist when you’re marrying one! LOL

I’ll try to do this without writing a book.
I have to admit it feels a bit awkward writing about my hunts for the whole world to see! My intention was to show Kirk’s work, not talk about myself!
I’ll start with the 10 pointer doing the sneak.
I got him 9 days after the opener of the archery season a few years ago. A few days earlier I had a huge 10 pointer bust me in the same spot when I was drawing my bow back . He walked directly toward me and I tried to draw as he turned but he saw me and bolted.
I moved my stand to the side of where he came in so I wouldn’t be so noticable if he would come in again. The 10 I ended up getting came in on the same trail as the last buck so he was totally broadside to me and didn’t notice I was there. When I saw he was a 10 I figured he was the same buck so I immediately concentrated on the shot and let the arrow go. (I was in Pierce County and in the same climber about 60 yards from where I shot my 12 pointer this year.) When I walked up to him I realized I got douped and this wasn’t the same buck! I was disappointed and happy at the same time. I figured he was a Poper since he was a 10 but was just under the minimum by about an inch…
I got the upright 9 pointer with the rack that’s just a little wider than his ears in Buffalo County a year prior to the 10. I was hunting different properties and the rut was starting to get close. There were a lot of scrapes opening up and more movement during daylight hours. The morning I got him I woke up late but I decided to go anyway. I didn’t get to my stand until about 9:00am. This time I was hunting a ladder stand on top of a ridge that came to a point and there were a bunch of smaller bucks cruising it the evening before. Now that I think of it I didn’t sleep very well the night before because I knew it was starting to get good and I was excited because the big boys were going to be on their feet during daylight any time now.
I was in my stand for about 15 minutes and could hear them cruising just over the ridge from me but couldn’t see them until they got out of range. I decided to try some rattling and grunting. Within another 15 minutes I heard another one walking down below me so I grunted. He stopped and I waited until I heard him walking again to send him another grunt. He stopped again so I waited until he started walking. This time he was coming toward me so I waited. He stopped but I still couldn’t see him so I waited for a while and grunted at him again. After I grunted he walked right into where my shooting lane was and stopped. He was obviously looking for where the grunting was coming from. I could see he had 5 points on his right side so I thought he was a nice 10 so I took aim and let one fly. He whirled around and ran back to where he came from. When I walked up on him the first thing I noticed was how much bark he had between the bases of his rack and his brow tines. This boy had been doing some serious rubbing! I ended up removing all of it because when people would look at it they would pick at it and pull bark off like it was some kind of novelty.
I’d post a pic but the “Manage My Photos” button disappeared. I’ll do a seperate post for that after I get done with this one.
The big 9 pointer was taken with a rifle in Buffalo County. I was in a CRP field watching a woods where I was seeing several bucks cross in the open on opening day. On the second day a smaller buck appeared out of nowhere in front of me so it became obvious that they were able to move through the weeds undetected. I decided to move to the top of a little hill where I could see down into the weeds better and it also put me closer to the woods. I no more than got into position when I heard a bunch of shooting to my right. A few minutes later I saw this guy and a couple smaller bucks working their way through the woods in front of me. He walked to the edge of the woods and looked around like he was making sure it was okay to come into the open. I put the cross hairs on his front shoulder and pulled the trigger. He flipped over backwards with his tongue hanging out so there was no tracking involved!
February 3, 2009 at 4:14 pm #47236Here’s a picture of the big 9 in the velvet. Kirk told me he was pretty sure he knew someone that had a game cam picture of my buck when I brought it to him to get it mounted. The guy was nice enough to give this picture to Kirk so I could have it.

THAT WAS ME!!!
It truly is a small world!!!
Kevin – I called that buck “Crabby” and at the time I was leasing Ron Brunners farm. Congrats on getting him! I saw him several times early in the season but never got a crack at him.

That is absolutely remarkable!!! All I can say is thanks, Brad, for sharing with me! That was very kind of you.
I was hunting Gary Hoyt’s land over by Metcalf’s farm. It was the Brantner’s that were shooting and chased him up to me.

My pleasure Kevin! I’m sure you would have done the same thing for someone else!
You have some great looking bucks and thanks for sharing your hunts with us here on IDO!
