This sounds like a pretty bad story, but we shouldn’t cast stones before we know both sides.
Maybe he was deer hunting and the beast got a little too close. I would personally challege it to a foot race, but maybe the guy was defending himself.
Albeit unlikely, there may be more to the story than a newspaper publishes.
Either way, it’s too bad a trophy had to die like that.
Sounds like he confessed to shooting it in it’s den so I doubt he was trying to defend himself! He probably saw it in the corn field and went to investigate…figured it was huge and decided to shoot and ask questions later….like can I buy a bear license over the counter after I kill it!!!

Exactly! I know a guy that hunts with this guy. Way bac when this bear was shot he had told me the guy was still hunting the corn field one day. He looked down the rows one by one. He spotted what appeared to be a deer laying down, which turned out to be the top 1/3 of the bear. He shot and when he got up to it he paniced, that is why they tried to buy a bear license. Not knowing what to do they just left it and the next day the farmer hit it with the combine. I see it as a mistake, none of us are perfect. I know we are all taught to make sure of our target and beyond but with limited visibility in a cornfield and not knowing that bear will den up in cornfields I could see how someones mind would convince them 100% that he was looking at a deer. I believe they should punish him how they see fit.
I do believe it was still breathing when he came upon it, if my memory is correct, so it was put out of it’s misery. But this is my memory we’re talking about G, heck I can’t even remember what I had for supper last night.
