Muzzle loader

I’m thinking of picking up a muzzle loader this year. I haven’t gun hunted in a number of years since I’ve taken up bow hunting. And I’ve never shot a muzzle loader, so this is all new to me.

I’m really liking the CVA Electra. I like the idea of no primer, just a switch flip and bang. Down side is that sucker is expensive and as of right now you can’t use this firearm in Colorado or Florida. Not that I am planning on going there anytime soon..

Can anyone offer any insight or preferences to help guide me in this purchase?

    Thanks,

    Jami

I’ve shot a TC omega since they came out. Never had a miss fire and their barrels are guarenteed for life. ML hunting is very addictive and provides more oppurtunities in the woods for hunters. Its a very close second to bowhunting in my book. You’ll have a smokin good time!!!

Same here, I have been shooting a stainless TC Omega for 2 years. No complaints, no misfires. I really dont mind using the 209 primer either, I think I would probably worry about the electra system failing before a 209. It is all part of the game….
I also added a 1x dot scope that has multiple reticle in red or green. Even more fun! I havent taken anything good with it yet, but your chances that time of year are well above average in my opinion. I am in 60M in Wisconsin which is a shotgun or muzzleloader zone with an extended season, so I can hunt buck or doe for almost 3 weeks

I will put another plug in for the TC. I have had mine for 3 years and no miss fires. You can not go erong with the 209 primer. CVA does make one like the Omega but you will be replacing the sights all the time. The extra money spent on the TC is well worth it.

I will also vote for the TC but I would recommend the TRIUMPH the break open action is great and makes cleaning way easier on a guy. I personally have a ENCORE PRO HUNTER and I do love it but the TRIUMPH is less money and shoots just as well.

I bought a CVA Buckhorn 6 years ago. Not a compalint, Yes a very cheap gun, but it shoots great! a no frills gun.
I won a T/C pro hunter 2 years ago and used that last year. 4 deer with the CVA and 2 deer with the T/C.
The only thing I can say is do not neglect the gun for cleaning. My $.02 worth. Good Luck and Have FUN

I’m also looking for a new or used smoke pole myself. If money weren’t an issue, that Encore Pro Hunter is one sweet gun, but holy $$$!!

I have a modified TC Encore (stainless with wood stock) and love it. I replaced the breech plug with a .25 ACP Breech. This allows you to use a long .22 hornet primer versus a 209 primer. This cuts down on the flame and fouling (very clean). And more importantly it reduces the amount of energy (but still gets the job done) which results in more consistent patterns.

For more info – Check out this muzzleloader site called R&P Muzzleloading

They also make this breech for the Omega (but not yet for the Pro Hunter or Triumph)

Another vote for TC Omega here also, I love mine, no missfires in two years. If I had it to do over again I would go with a stainless barrel. My dream gun would be the TC Encore Pro Hunter.

Ritter, I have a CVA buckhorn 209 and for a cheap smoke pole this thing is a TACK DRIVER!!!!!
100 grains of Tripple 7 pellets
    270 grain Powerbelt Platinum

Stack-em in a snuff can at 100yds all day long with open sights. I took a doe standing broadside(smoked her center chest) last year at 137 paces. Deer would really fear this gun if I could put a scope in it.
but seriously befor you buy one shoot a couple, you can shoot mine anytime you want.

    Wow!!

Thanks for all the info fellas. I’ve never shot/hunted with a smoke pole and none of the clowns I pal around with have either. So I’m trying to get as much info before I jump in head first.

    I’ll definately give TC’s a look.

Corey, you’ll be getting a phone call once this dang heat breaks! Maybe a little black powder 101?

    Thanks all.

For those of you with a CVA Buckhorn, how much do they cost? I’ve heard good things about this gun without breaking the bank.

I bought a cheap economy bp last year with a scope on it. Its a cheaper model but shoots great. 2″ groups at 100 yrds. with the scope. For the money I paid for it, $149, any mistake in not hitting the bullseye seems to be my fault, not the guns, cheaper gun but shoots great. Anything within 150 to 200 yrds is mine, get one with a scope if you can.

Thanks fellas! I’m going to go look at the Buckhorn today. I believe that we cannot use scopes in Mn for bp right?

That’s right, but if you want to use your ML durring shot gun season you can use a scope then.

TC OMEGA for me also. If I upgraded it would be the TC PRO HUNTER just because of the twist out breech plug. Good luck!
