e-collar questions

Santa gifted our family a beautiful little 7-week old Brittish Lab. We’d had an American Lab that passed away abruptly this fall at the age of 8.

I’d trained that dog utilizing Richard Wolter’s “Water Dog” – what an awesome book. With this new hound, I’ve been pouring over “Top Dog”, which is proving to be a good read as well. The book has me convinced that I’d be well served getting my paws on an e-collar.

Looking for some feedback from those of you who have them. How much do I need to spend? Quality is more important to me than a bunch of exotic features.

A couple of things to consider is the effect range of the collar and if you want tone. Most of my use is in heavy cover so I really did not need range of more than a few hundred yards. I won’t stimulate a dog that I can’t see.

I use the tone feature all the time. If trained correctly, the dog will respond on the tone instead of waiting for stimulation. Buy the collar and have the dog wear it for weeks before you even push a button on it.

Price wise you should be able to look at about 150.00 on up.

I agree, definitely get a collar with tone or page. I’ve always been a big believer in tritronics and dogtra, great customer service from both companies and rock solid performance. The only things I needed to send either of my collars in for were “problems” I caused like tearing off the rubber plug for the 12V plug in and over tightening a probe. The rubber plug, tri sent one out no charge. The dogtra collar was sent out, came back a week later with a letter…thanks for your business…no charge!!

I still run the dogtras, my dad now owns the tri, both collars have been through the swamp and back many times over, still running strong!! I wouldn’t hesitate buying either brand again, with a slight nod going to the dogtra, I simply prefer the page over the tone.

I’m with birddog Dogtra or Tritronics. I was able to use both this year. Both where very good. I liked the Dogtra a little better. You are able to dial in the level better for your dog and the battery lasted longer between charging. You will need send around 250 to get one with any range.

I have had 2 tri-tronics collars and loved them both. Only got rid of the first one because I added a 2nd dog, and wanted to be able to control them both with one controller. The tone feature is a must, and came in real handy last week while hunting smart late season roosters. A little beep to recall my lab, and we were able to sneak up on some honey holes without a word being spoken, all the while the dog being birdy as heck with all the sent from the concentrated birds.
