If you shoot a deer while making a drive on private land, in Minnesota, how long do you have to tag it? What my party has done since I was a little kid was finish the drive then come back & gut & tag the deer. I was wondering what some of you guy’s do.

We finish the drive as well. Not sure if there’s a law against that.

There probably is, afterall look at the stupid lic. system we have…notch this, poke that, staple here, sign there….and watch out for the dangling chads….

The way I read – you have to validate(ie: notch, poke, staple, etc…..) at the site of the kill. The law states you can transport the deer out of the woods with no tag attached, but you must have the tag already validated before doing so.

I don’t know that there are any rules about tagging at the TIME of kill. I would say no, you don’t need to tag it immediately after you kill it because there is no way to measure this.

    1. We don’t know the exact time the animal quit breathing.

    2. Now athletics comes into play, i.e. how quick you are jumping through humps to get to the animal. And even further, how far it was away from you when you shot it.

Finish the drive. Notch the tag, right before you get the knife dirty guttin’ it
