I’m interested in buying an aluminum dog box to mount on my hitch haul for hunting trips. My main concerns are weather protection and security. I used a plastic kennel with a insulated wrap last year but am not satisfied with the protection level. Has anyone used a product they liked?

I guess in General I do not like anything that I would put on my hitch. No way am I putting him there and have other peoples driving depend on his safety. They do make insulated aluminum ones that fit into your truck.

August 24, 2007 at 7:40 pm #34591I agree with Rob, I wouldn’t put my dogs on a hitch hauler either. Sounds like maybe you don’t have a truck if needing a hauler? If you drive a car, most of them have a fold down back seat these days. I’ve used the trunk folded down a seat and slid a porta kennel door between the seat and the trunk, gives them light and air. I also threw down some outdoor carpet back there to keep it from getting trashed. Worked quite well actually! Kind of funny watching the looks on faces when dogs bust loose out of the trunk. If your driving a suv, get some outdoor carpet to line the back end and the back of the seats as well and a cage, done this also. Worked well.
I went as far as getting a topper with windoors and side access doors, specifically for my dogs. They love it back there, it’s their home away from home.
I just don’t trust other drivers well enough to put my buddies out in the open on a hauler. I own one and have no trouble using it for coolers and gear but not my dogs.
