Alright guys it finally happened my friend has twisted my finger, it didn’t even take the whole arm who knew , and I have a greed to start hunting. for now I’m sticking with birds, Phesants, and try my hand at turkeys the next few seasons as well. So because of this I come here for some advice. If you could, and I have to because the boss says so,only have one shotgun that would work well for both types of birds what would it be, and should I be able to find a decent one used? I would like to keep it the $300 range if possible because I know I will have more gear to buy as seasons get closer. If that’s not possible could you please make all responses in care of THE BOSS and I’ll pass them along to her.

I was in the same boat as you (or should we say field) and was told the same thing. Pick up a 870. I did, has been a great gun for a guy just getting started!

May 31, 2007 at 4:01 pm #32028Not knowing the type of gun you prefer and considering your just starting and don’t want to invest big, you can’t go wrong with the time proven Remington 870.

May 31, 2007 at 4:13 pm #32029Ditto! You can get a 870 Express for about $250 (maybe cheaper during sales). You can get a 870 Wingmaster for around $375. These are new prices, you can find very nice used ones and save a little if you would like. The difference between the two is grading. They both have choke tubes and 3 inch receivers. The Wingmaster has a nice blued finish and glossy wood stock. The Express has a matted metal finish and dull wood finish. Good Luck

May 31, 2007 at 5:59 pm #32035I would try looking into a slightly used gun, you will be surprised how fast the other items will add up, although your gun is a very important part of your experience, you will soon learn not to skimp in other areas also.

May 31, 2007 at 8:49 pm #32037thanks guys I appreciate the help. Looks like I will be looking for the 870 or the Nova, which ever I can get more bang (literally) for the buck out of. I’m sure you will all be hearing more from me as I figure out I have NO clue what I’m doing. Although I have figured out point the barrel at the birds so that’s got to be a good start
