    Kooty,

How well do you know the other guys that you drew the tag with? Hopefully they also are geared up to put in a tough hunt. There would be nothing worse than working for a nice moose, to come back to camp to find out that your buddy shot small bull 200 yards from camp while walking on a logging road.

Congrats on the tag. My wife and I have seen Moose while snowmobiling NW of Two Harbors quite regularily. The only other time I saw a Moose was near Park Rapids while deer hunting. Boy are those guys big!

It’s me and one other good friend. He is a workout freak, so he’ll make a great sherpa.

For anyone who doesn’t know, the MN moose license is a party license. You can apply from 2 – 4 people at a time. You only get one tag for the party. Either party can shoot. I believe, but can’t confirm, there is also a rule we can only be so far apart at any given point in the hunt. Got a lot to learn this summer.

It’s up to the flip of the coin for us then alternate half days from there. Keeps your mind in the hunt if you know what I mean. The best part for me, my buddy doesn’t think he wants to pull the trigger, just go along for the experience. He’s into the boundary water trips.

Sounds like you won’t have to file his firing pin after all…

One time snowmobiling north of Ely, I crested a small hill doing about 60 mph and had a big bull moose standing in the middle of the trail After burning up the brake, and cleaning my pants out, I watched it run through a bunch of new growth pines, and the tops were just going back and forth from it crashing through them. I equated this one to a large horse. I wouldn’t want to carry it out !!!

Kooty you should consider taking Binzer along, he has a lot of experience shooting … did I mention he can’t hit anything

Congrats Kooty on a “once in a lifetime tag”. Looking forward to seeing a pic of a big old bull with you and your buddy in it. And since you had to cancel our other hunt that we planned, I’m expecting to come over for some delicious moose steaks!

If I get a moose, we can invite everyone at IDA for steaks. I was standing in Cabelas today looking at the mounted moose at the base of the mountain. Now I’m sure he is a dandy, but if I get anything close to that, I’ll have my work cut out for me. Can’t wait.

BTW, I learned a ton from a guy at Cabelas today. Lots more to go, but what a great resource close to home.

    Kooty,

A friend of mine did this a few years ago. On the shooting thing, they both lined up on it, and did a one, two, three, shoot. The bull went down, and they both got it

I always figured that would work if I ever get drawn

I can say if that scenario would play out, I’d be happy. However, honestly, I want to pull the trigger. I know, very selfish. Although, if Skip decides to hunt, I’ll be very happy for him if he gets the shot. A true hunt is what I’m after, so the kill is just icing on the cake. Besides, I know he won’t want a moose head on the wall.

I’m a little nervous about a lake we are staying by. It’s loaded with walleyes. Hope I can keep my eye on the target.

The trick is getting up there enough before season to figure it out. If I got a permit I would probably drop off some flyers or at least talk to some local bar/restaurant owners and find a local to guide. Maybe for meat. Locals in the know will know where they are. You’ve got some work ahead of you. Congrats and good luck.

My unit is all BWCA, so no guides allowed, actually they are very strict about having other members in the party without a license. Once the animal is down, the national guard can be called. BTW, I’ve got all you guys cell phone numbers!!!!

Wow. I did not know that. I would still consider getting some local “intel”. Maybe even for the promise of some meat. They can point you in the right direction and not actually accompany you. For a one in a lifetime hunt I would sure want to stack the cards in my favor. The last time I was up there for several days grouse hunting we noticed the moose sign was definitely thicker in some areas. It would be nice to know some of those concentrated areas for your hunt.

I’ve got an ace in the hole. A gentleman from IDA is a former fisheries worker and has hunted this area every year for 20 years. So, I’m feeling very confident about the intel I’ve received so far. July’s trip will be intersting. Can wait to hop in the canoe.
