I come home from the fishing opener yesterday to find out I drew a once in a lifetime moose license. I’m very pumped, but now the real work starts. I’ve never been in teh boundry waters, I’m looking for any direction you can give me. Where to rent a canoe, pull permits, get topo maps etc…All advice is welcome.

May 14, 2007 at 6:19 pm #31555Start working out now, Moose are HUMONGOUS and you have to carry that thing out on your back, then go back, get your canoe, gear, etc.
I have always seen them early mornings in swampy “backwater” areas feeding. They are a heck of an animal.

May 14, 2007 at 7:01 pm #31557Kooty, I have never researched the moose licenses.. are you confined to a smaller area within the open moose hunting area?
I know there are several motor on lakes in the bwca which motors 25 hp and less are allowed. I have seen my fair share around Fall and Basswood lake over time, and those are motor on lakes. I would suggest researching what areas most the harvested animals have come from in the past, talk to the area DNR or forest service and see if they can help point you in the right direction.. or even different canoe outfitters after getting what info you can out of the DNR and they would be able to help with equipment, travel routes(you dont want to be mountain climbing on a portage), and they often have canoe guides that may be able to offer some very good information from their own observations.
What was earlier stated is very true, moose are big, and it wll have to be quartered out in the field and carried out. The hide alone can weigh as much as a dressed deer.
Good luck

May 14, 2007 at 7:09 pm #31558Kooty shoot me a PM. I have all the gear to travel up there. If you don’t own it- don’t buy it you are welcome to mine if I own it. As for my canoe, probably not. It is pretty fragile and probably wouldn’t ride right with a big old moose in it.

May 15, 2007 at 11:11 pm #31574thanks for the offers everyone. I fully suspect I’ll be in touch once I’ve made my first list. Number one order right now is start my physical conditioning. I have negelected that part of my life for too many years and being a desk jockey since college hasn’t helped me much.

May 16, 2007 at 11:04 pm #31581Kooty after watching the intesne training you endured this past weekend, the only words of wisdom I have is … Avoid Grow

I can’t wait to set the canoe in the water and start my first trek into the woods. Never been a “real” hunt in the sticks. How’s a guy suppose to take any beer??

May 18, 2007 at 1:17 pm #31653Kooty,
How well do you know the other guys that you drew the tag with? Hopefully they also are geared up to put in a tough hunt. There would be nothing worse than working for a nice moose, to come back to camp to find out that your buddy shot small bull 200 yards from camp while walking on a logging road.
Congrats on the tag. My wife and I have seen Moose while snowmobiling NW of Two Harbors quite regularily. The only other time I saw a Moose was near Park Rapids while deer hunting. Boy are those guys big!
