thought I could start here for info
we would like to buy 1 rooster and 8 hens to release on our 64 acer parcel- if I heard right it should be the right amount of rooster to hen thing- we have a place called “Duck Inn” 7 miles west of Garrison, Mn conected to 40 acers of county land, mostly swamp, beaver dam, tamarack, bog, farming ground near by- we have 12 wild turkeys that have been there the last 8 years and doing well- we cleared a lot of prime timber this winter- oak and popple- the 64 acers are pastured yearly, but still have brush for cover (hazel brush)
what would the cost be for someone to raise them to release them this year and who could we talk to about it
we will start from there- thanks

I would try any of the game farms in the area. Wild wings is sort of in your direction. There is probably one closer. They would be able to tell you who to call. I think most of those places buy birds from a grower also.

Cory Waller/Wallerbass on this site used to have them. I got some from him a couple years ago.

Even if you raise the birds to maturity, you’ll want to account for some mortality. I’ve heard 10% or less actually make it through the first winter.

Oh, and keeping them in a pen is a nightmare unless you have enough space and cover. They’ll kill each other all day long.

Good luck with your project! Sounds like fun.

Edit: Just remembered that Oakwood Game Farm is not too far from you. You could probably buy adults there for release and get all the help you’d need. http://www.oakwoodgamefarm.com/

There is a Game Farm in Princeton. You could get birds from them at any age, or maturity, and they have been in the business for a very long time..
I just called a friend up in Princeton, it is Oakwood Game Farm, no. is 763-389-2031..
    Good Luck.

seems as though you have the habbitat, what about food and water sources? They will stay and reproduce if you have all the key ingredients. Also nothing chases birds away faster than fox and yotes.

I know nothing about pheasents- dont even hunt them, but they disapeared years ago in our area- in bad weather years in a row- just miss there call- kinda like not hearing frogs croak every spring– and [censored] willows budding- they have to be mature- and ready to go- we would keep feed at the Duck INN FOR THEM AND THE TURKEYS-

My suggestion would be to get a lot more than that.. I don’t know the exact numbers but we raise and release 100 each year on our 160 acre farm. We have all the perfect habitat but a Red-tail hawk could take care of your 9 birds in a week. Wiht pheaseants it’s a numbers game. We buy ours through the local sportsman club at 95 Cents per bird. They’re about a day old when we get em. Not sure if you’re looking to raise them or simply buy adults and release them. Just a thought.

The full grown pheasants at Oakwood are going for about $10 a bird right now. They also have newly hatched birds that are much cheaper. I suppose I could deliver a few the next time I’m up there as long as I can bring the dog for a walk on the land every now and then. There is a guy in Aitkin that runs a game farm. I don’t remember the name, but he is a very nice guy and could probably give you some advice for raising birds up there.

Im going to get a few from Oakwood in Princeton as soon as this snow gives up so we can spread some cracked corn spread around the Russ&Judys “DUCK INN” to get them use to the area- thinking of getting a few partridge from them also (cluckers) since they raise them too, we have some running around but theres plenty of room for more, you have to have something to watch if the deer arent moving- Roosters are $10 and Hens are $6.50 if you pick them up- not sure what the cluckers were (all ready to release)-

we call it “Duck Inn” for a reason- If you like to duck hunt stay tune for more info later from us, for fall season hunting.
