Heard this on the news and got and email at work:

This was in rural Rollingstone ,MN

This guy was combining corn and the combine tire fell into a big hole. He thought it was a badger hole until a big black paw came out. Pretty soon a head appeared. They knew for sure it was no badger. He wasn’t very happy either. It was a bear’s den – 5 feet deep. The bear was trying to dig out from under the wheel but could not get out, the DNR told them to shoot it. It dressed out 287 pounds, and was a male.

Was it injury from the tire is that why they shot it? Or was it the easiest way to take care of it?
Where do they figure it came from? Are they starting to move south because of loss of habitat or did it come from WI.
I have heard the bear population is multipling fast over by Eau Claire. I hunt by Lewiston. I dont know if I want to meet a bear in the dark.

a bear is more scared of you then you are scared of it. I was very upset when i was watching tv the other day and they had a special on bears. They make these magnificent creatures look like they are very aggressive and angry animals. If you leave them alone, they will leave u alone. I for one was upset that they shot the bear, they could of moved it somewere else.

Was backing the dang combine off the bear and seeing if it would run away an option, or are people so damn scared of bears that the only option was to shoot it? I understand a moose running around in rush-hour traffic needs to be put down for safety reasons, but a poor bear in a hole just wanting to get thru the winter, C’MON!!! I just hope the thing needed to be put down from injuries sustained rather than simply because the DNR was too lazy to respond or the farmer was scared of the bear?

And before you blab to me about the damage the bear caused to the farmers field or being an bunny-hugger, just let me say we’ve wrecked more of their habitat than they have of ours….and, I do hunt bears and love to eat them, but this story shows a lack of compassion if you ask me!

I really don’t know much of the story besides what is posted, but it did say that the farmer was told to shoot it by the authorities. Not sure who that would’ve been, but you can see a sheriff in the background of one of the pictures. I wouldn’t be blaming the farmer on this one. It is just too bad that the bear had to pick that row to build a den. Would’ve still been sleeping if it would’ve just picked one two rows over.

I wonder just how often this happens up north. I know my brother used to work near Park Rapids for a huge outfit and he said that the bears were always thick in the corn fields. How many get crushed by machinery and we never know about it?

I was picking up my son in Lewiston yesterday and met a guy from Rollingston. I asked him about it and he said everyone he has talked to said it was in WI. He did say one was spotted 3 miles north of Lewiston and one was spotted by Utica last year.
I am not scared of bears but I think being in SE MN while heading to my deer stand and bumped into a bear would probaly make me mess my drawers! It is not really something I am expecting to encounter.
I thought it was a shame they just shot the bear unless it was injured. I kinda laughed at the pictue where the guy was posing with the bear as if it was a trophy he worked so hard to get!
I would like to find out more of the story.

    I lived just outside of
St Charles MN and saw a number of bears in that area. In 1996 there were 5 different farmers who claimed to see bears that fall and no one would believe them until a 280# bear was hit by a semi on I90 just outside of Eyota. I have seen bears as far west as Pine Island and back to 1990. I think that they either come across the river from Wisconsin or come down from up north. As elusive as bears are they can move around alot with out been seen by anyone.

They are in the Rochester area and have been sighted by Marion/I90. Their habitat has been severely disrupted and this just figures. There has also been one sighted down by Grand Meadow. I hope they don’t treat them like monsters…they are amazing animals. What animal isn’t I guess

    Thanks for the story.

I don’t think this is the same bear though. There are two things that differ from the picture. The soil conditions are quite different. The one on the link is pretty sandy. The one that I recieved an email of appears to be very dark soil. The second thing I noticed is that in the picture that I posted, it appears that the left combine tire fell into the bear’s den. In the linked bear story, the right tire must have gotten stuck because of the way the corn rows are still standing.

This is pretty interesting if these are in fact two independent stories. Not sure though.

You are right. The one I posted was not the same one that is circulating on the internet. The one circulating on the internet is here:
