Trapping by Canoe?

I am wondering if there is anyone who traps or did trap by canoe? I am thinking of hitting a small river this year to water trap coon, mink, and possibly rats. I have never trapped this way and also do not have a canoe yet. Is this safe and possible? Things I am curious to hear about is how easy it is to get in and out of the canoe and also how much weight can a canoe hold?
I know how to make the many different water sets and know the animals are in the area I want to target, but I really don’t want to have to walk the entire stretch with my packbasket, traps, stakes, and other gear.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
One other thing, if there is anyone in the LaCrosse area that has a canoe or small boat and outboard for rent, let me know

I would suggest a small flat bottom rather than a canoe. They make flat bottoms down to 10 feet long. These are almost as light as the lightest canoe and can run in very shallow water.
If you have a good day on the trap line you could end up with a quite a bit of weight in the boat. Flatties can generally handle more weight and are much more stable compared to a canoe. The last thing you want is to be dumped in the drink far from your truck in cold weather.

I’ve trapped with a canoe or mostly pulled it along for comfort and to haul traps and game. Canoe’s are clumsy as far as getting in/out plus with the onset of colder weather tipping over is not fun. I would go with a small flat, the skinny type, you don’t see them too often but they are more stable yet light weight. Good luck, Stay Dry

I had very good luck with using an Otter duck boat the 1200 stealth it is very stable I could kneal sideways in it and work over the side and never got out or tipped it enough to take on any water and you can put a trolling moyor on it and it moves very fast with a #55lb minnkota and is silent
    good luck

Go with a flat bottom.I know a guy that used to use a flat bottom to trap the Missouri around Nebraska City and the creeks and rivers that run into it.If he didn’t drown on that little 10’flat bottom there it has to be pretty safe .He wasn’t a small guy and the Mo down there is a 1/4 mile wide and 10-25’deep.

I just got back from walking about 2 miles one way of the bank. The sign I found was decent and the river is flowing a lot swifter than I remembered. Most of the stretch that I walked had high banks with a few sandbars and quite a few places where critters were getting down to the water’s edge. I could walk it, but that would be a ton of equipment on my back. There is still 4 more miles of river that I haven’t seen yet. I may have to look into a smaller flat with a small outboard to be able to trap this river effectively.

Pretty much gave up on the trapping by canoe on this section of land.

But, member John R has lent me his duck skiff to use on another area that I started trapping today. I am going to get a little better organized for next year and try to round up a cheap little trapping boat. The skiff worked pretty good today and I didn’t go swimming
