Coon calling outing

Finally, I got to get out and do some calling tonight. IDA member “Tobi” invited me out to call coons on one of his families farms and of course I jumed at the opportunity. We started walking to our first stand location right at dark. While we were walking across the cut corn and bean fields, we stopped for a second so Todd could explain the lay of the land. While we were talking, I happened to look to our right and there stood a deer about 40 yards away silouetted against the skyline. Then two more deer crested the hill. We had the wind in our face and we were below them and they had no clue we were even there, it was very cool. The first area we called was on the top of a ridge with mostly all farm fields bordered by woods. On one of the stands, Todd heard something in the woods, but it never did show itself. We then made a move to the bottom of the ridge to the heavily wooded valley. On our second stand, we got some good action. Todd said he heard something coming so we waited until they got closer. Once we thought they were close enough to make a shot, we hit the light. There in front of was not one set of eyes, but three Two of them were coming in on a string, but held up in some thick brush and not leaving us a clean shot. We then killed the light and waited a little longer. We then decided to shut the caller off and move to another area. Just as I was getting ready to shut the caller off, Todd said he heard something running. I assumed they were running away, but just then, there was a coon about 10 yards away from the caller. Todd had the light on him and tried to get a shot off only to hear his rifle go “click”. I pulled my rifle up and just when I was squeezing the trigger Todd moved the light Needless to say, that coon made a clean get away Watching and hearing them come running in to the call is awesome whther you kill them or not. We are planning on getting out there again soon. Did I mention I just love calling in critters whether it be coon, coyote, fox, or any other predator that will answer the call of the wild?

That sounds like a lot of fun. Do you still see alot of them around water when everything freezes up?

Right now the coon are still running the woods where we were. Once it freezes up, they will be around the water more, but they are still denning in the woods, so they will be in both areas. But, I do know of one place that is around the river that is chock full of coons right now, too bad it would cost me a small fortune to hunt them
I am hoping to get out a few more times before the gun deer season open next weekend. It gets pretty exciting when you see and hear the critters come racing down the ridge to attack the call
