WMA’S

Just decided with a buddy of mine that we need to start hunting for some new WMA’s for bowhunting. Can someone please tell me that we can find some in our great state that is not over hunted. The one’s we’ve used for years have had the pressure increase greatly, and these are by no means metro areas. Is there hope, go South, North?

I would say that Carlos would be a safe choice after the gun season. The crowds clear out once the ponds freeze up and the deer season is over for gun hunting. I have done a lot of bird hunting out there after deer hunting if over and I normally have the entire place to myself. DON’T go out there during gun season, I can’t stress that enough. There are some places out near Forest Lake that don’t get hit that hard either. You will just have to take a look at some WMA online and go out driving for a day to look at them. I have been doing that a lot as of late. I have found some great ones that don’t get touched at all. I was out phesant hunting yesterday on one that I found a week ago, and to be honest, I don’t think that anyone has set a foot on that WMA all year. Do some research and drive out to look at them and I don’t think that you will have a hard time finding somewhere to hunt…. alone

Try the Sunrise section of Carlos Avery.

It’s on the east side of 35.

I agree with these guy’s recommendation on Carlos. There are some great opportunities in there….especially later in the season after the mobs go home. Don’t believe for a second that all the big bucks have been killed cause it ain’t so! Another thing about Carlos is that they tend to yard up later, making finding them much easier!

Another thing to consider is some of the small WMAs that barely even show up on the map. I have a handfull of these that I like to hunt because most people drive right past them or don’t know they exist! The only thing about these is you have to be careful about how you access the area because deer generally are very close. Good Luck!

A huge non-typical buck was taken by Deb Luzinski in Otter Lake Regional Park. She belongs to the MBRB. Sounds like a good way to hunt! The story is on the front page of Outdoor News.

If your anywhere near the Metro area, sign up for some Metro bowhunts via the Metro Hunter Resource Base.. MBRB.

This news link highlights a buck taken from a local metro hunt. http://wcco.com/local/local_story_305120455.html

    PM me for more info.

I tried 3 or 4 years in a row to get into that program. I’d see em at the deer classic and take a brochure, nobody, not once, ever contacted me from that organization. They make you feel all warm and fuzzy about helping out with population control, but the only feeling I ever got was that you had to either be in the “in-crowd” or know someone in the “in-crowd” to get in on one of these hunts! Finally I just gave up trying….

Slip – have you been assigned an MBRB number ? I fulfilled the requirements they asked for and was selected to hunt this year for several hunts. Same story with my neighbor. I don’t know anyone within the organization. Your description of “it’s not who you are but who you know” is NOT what I experienced and NOT what the organization is about.

Never got to that point. I got a couple of PM’s from guys with similar results. This was close to 10 years ago, maybe there has been a change in management, but back then it seemed that they were only interested in handing out flyers at the sportshows and not getting back to you when you showed any interest. Like I said, after 3-4 times of trying I figured the heck with it…..that’s the long way of answering your question, no I never got a number.
