When does a jakes beard begin to form????

I was wondering if anybody has any idea how old a jake has to be before his beard is visible? Bowhunting this fall I’ve seen a ton of young turkeys but none seem to have any visible beard. Am I only seeing young hens? These are smaller than normal turkeys, I assume from this summer. Just hoping to see more jakes and toms next spring.
