The season opens Saturday, and I’ll be out stomping in the mud.

I picked up my tags today and F & W agent said there’s been a huge amount of guys buying tags. Last year at this time they had sold 20 permits. As of today they had sold almost 80 permits.

Hopefully we get a good clear freeze up soon! I live for trapping through the ice!!!!

There is a rumor of high prices for a few furbearers this year. I think that has the masses excited. I have not bought my trapping license this year, but I still might get one to trap some public land near me. Trapping is a lot of fun

Blue – Yes there are trappers on here. Trapping is one of the best building blocks of woodsmanship. A good trapper usually makes the best overall outdoorsman – period.

This’ll be the first year in 20 I do not lay steel . As a small baby in the house omits the time needed for daily trap checks and fur handling. Best reason I’ve ever had!!

Good luck on the line – looks like the early auction rats should be the critter to target……

We’ll be chasing muskrats. It really doesn’t matter what I trap for, I just love to get out there and have some fun.

My favorite to trap, is open water Beaver. There’s nothing funner and more frustrating than trying lure a Beaver to a custom made scent mound and pinching him with a fancy set of bracelets!

If anyone would wany some help, id love to go out with ya for a day. Ive always wanted to get out but do not know anyone who does. We have a serious beaver problem up north on our land, the DNR pays a guy to come trap them for us each year. Thats what got my interested when i saw him bring out a 3 foot beaver to his truck.

I trapped from a very young age through high school. It was such an enjoyable activity for me. I focused on rats, because it got me on the Apple River more. I had so much fun, and learned a whole bunch. Back then, $7+ was the average for rats.

If you have never felt a muskrat pelt, you can’t even imagine how soft and luxurious they are.

The first day my younger brother and I ever checked our traps was so memorable. I had to go to a cardiologist appt. that morning, and we were a bit rushed. Dad took us to the river and waited in the truck. When we returned with our spoils, he asked what was going on down at the river? All he could see was flashlight beams going up and down. We explained that the first two traps were a bit too deep and the rats were caught by the tail and we had to dispatch them with our flashlights (we weren’t allowed to carry guns alone back then). We learned so much quickly.

So Blue, ya like to look for those bubbles through the ice too. I plan on trapping this year also. I haven’t been in a few years. I’ve trapped for the better part of thirty years. Mostly rats for me. I used to target fox and coon, but really love the rat trapping. One side note– about 15 years ago we would catch some albino rats. The same stump and run for three years in a row. After that 3 year run, we never got another one. Just curious if anyone else had ever gotten any. good luck –John

I was sure hoping to see some pics of Blue’s catch today
Let me tell you a little secret . Blue is a heck of a trapper I tagged along with him today to check his trap line. All he had out were rat traps in an awesome area. I learned more about rat trapping today that I could have in 5 years of trying to learn on my own. Even though I couldn’t actually touch any traps or sets, he showed me a lot. I had an absolute blast riding in the boat and getting to see the woods and water with nobody else around. I will let him fill in the details if he chooses to do so Thanks Blue for the lesson

Here’s one of six gray fox I’ve caught so far this year. Didn’t know there were so many in one area.
