I’ve hunted many rabbits from railroad tracks. That being said, I have no real definite answer if it’s legal. By law, I’m sure it’s private property. If they wanted to press charges, I’m sure they could. It’s the Railroad, they have more $$$ than god or Bill Gates.

It is not posted. You can legally hunt Potlach land. That is also private, unless it is leased and posted.

“Last year, 503 people died while trespassing on railroad property throughout the United States,” said Dennis Jenson, general director-police operations.
Were they deaf, dumb, and blind?
Trains CHOO CHOO the ground shakes……………….

col, I am guessing all the vegabonds, are most of the deaths from jumping on moving trains, and most of the trespassers. they are just lumped together with hunters, i think.

We hunt a railroad right of way. We were told that our stands need to by 50′ from the center of the tracks and we cannot fire on or across the tracks by Canadian National Railroad. They were very strict about this. They gave one month to move the stands. We did. They have came by since and taken down anyone that didn’t meet the criteria. So they do mean business!!! No trespassing is no trespassing!!!

Might be commonplace, but in Iowa at least, they mean business. Union Pacific now has most crossings posted to the bejeepers and I’ve been asked to leave on several occasions. I’ve seen white pickups patroling them, especially on opening weekend.

I have done work for the UP railroad, and I know that it is illegal to hunt on their property. It is a liability issue. Most of the track, they own 80 or 50 feet on each side, of that said side track. If that makes sense…
