ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent

While bear hunting north of ely a couple of weeks ago, the weather was beautiful, and the bugs were out.

The first 2 nights sitting in the stand were bug filled. I was chewed up and down by them buggers. And it seems that they grow them bigger in the northern counties. I swear I could hear them coming in like a pack of helecopters.

Two people in my group had this ThermaCell product and were raving as to how well it worked. Since one of them harvested their animal the night before, that left one TermaCell available, and I was quick to grab it.

First impression was that this little plastic piece wasn’t worth the $24. So I was skeptical. But if it helped keeping me still in the stand, it was worth a shot.

These units run with a butane cartridge and mosquito repellent mats. You insert the cartridge in the lower part of the unit, and the blue mat under the screen on the upper part of the unit. The butane heats the mat which releases the repellent.

The butane cylinder will last up to 12 hours, or 3 mats. Each mat will last about 4 hours and will slowly turn white as the repellent is release. Once the mat is bone white, its time to replace.

Needless to say this device worked wonders. Before going to the stand I replaced the mat, tossed it in the back pack and fired the unit up once I got to the stand. I was mosquito free. I could see the little buggers swarming around me, but not on me.

The only thing I didn’t like was the lighting device. To light the unit you have to push the button to the right 3 or 4 times and it is noisy. Like a push button lighter. Once lit, set it under neath your seat on the floor of the stand and relax.

One other thing to note, the front screen does get quit warm, not red hot, but it will make you flinch if you grab it with a bare mit.

Refills for the unit will run about $6. This includes a butane cylinder and 3 more matts.

Needless to say, I went to Wally World and purchased one for myself, not only for hunting, but it also works great while enjoying a meal on the deck!

    Thats my 2 cents

Jami, you could have saved yourself $3. or so bucks! Sportsmans Warehouse has them in stock. I posted a report on these fantastic devices in June when the skeeters were as thick as fog (in the cat forum). They are great!

I’m not sure if the one you used is differant than Sportsmans Warehouse…but I knocked mine onto the carpeting in my boat. No problem…they are basicly a hand warmer with the repelent pad on the top.

I can see where the lighter would be kinda noisy out in the woods…I wonder if the flame of a lighter would get inside far enough to light the element??

Good post, I never thought of using them for bear hunting.

Ps Are you haveing bear for breakfast yet?

Do you think deer could smell them? I have never hunted bear and do not know if they can smell as good as a deer or not. Just wondering.

    Thanks

That exact question is what has been holding me back. Could use one early bow season some evenings. I guess for $24, I can use it on the deck too !!! Never thought of that.

Ritt that is the last thing you need, to be more comfortable while in the stand. How does it look again? One foot propped up, bow on hanger, arms dangling , and eyes closed. But I guess that is a proven tactic for ya.
    See ya Saturday?

    “can deer smell them”

There is a tiny bit so smoke(?) that will come off them when first lit…I’ve tried sniffing the pads new and while they are being heated…and can’t smell them…

I would guess to say yes they can…but will it alarm them…I have no idea.

PS I know that sniffing those pads…explains alot.

Bob, you’ve got to do what works. Two years in a row I’m in the most unconvential position in the stand, and have two deer to show for it!

Well see if the garbage stand produces on saturday.
