Looking for any advice on planting food plots for Deer and Roosters. On what to buy, plant and leave standing for the winter. I have about 20 acres I told my Dad that it would pay for us to change it over from a boring hay field to a project that would benefit both wildlife and my tummy.

I would like to get something to draw them in besides Corn and Beans.

    Thanks is advance

Are you looking for something to plant yet this year?
    Or next spring?

Winter wheat would be good, but I believe it should have already been planted or needs to be planted in a hurry. The WW needs to be planted early enough for it to emerge and make a good stand before frost. The frost kills it making it dormant for the winter. Then in the spring, it will re-emerge and grow to maturity and be ready for harvest in the late summer. It does come up nice and green and deer will definitely feed on it until it dies

I am looking to plant next spring. I would like to get the ground work done before it freezes.

All I have to dig it is a D-17 and a 3 bottom. So I will be sitting for awhile away.

I would like to plant something that would last a couple of season. Maybe replant every other year.

    Does that help?

I dont know what type of habitat you have around this food plot area you are trying to plant!

I have had great results with CHICORY and WHITE CLOVER mixed! Deer seem to really like it!! This is a great food source but not much for cover! if you would like to get some birds and give great fawning cover! buy a good native grass mix and plant most of your plot with this and do a 20 foot wide strip all the way around this with chicory! i think this would be a good thing to go with!!
your grasses will last for years! and the chicory will last around 5 years then just add some more seed and give a light disk!

Quality Food Plots. would be a good book to buy as well!you can get this at QDMA

Ive had good luck with Imperials Winter greens for late season! last few years the deer didnt seem to hit them at all untill mid dec. then they just destroyed them!!

many options out there get the book or subscribe to the QDMA it a great mag. has food plot info in each one!

    hope this helps!
im not much of a typer so there is only so much i can tell ya this way!

    good luck!

I planted winter wheat in late september before. I worked at a turkey raiser, and we would put it in as late as the last week in sept, and it came beautifully. This was in central MN
