I have an old version of streets 98 and i’ve found it pretty usefull in finding possible hunting spots i like to bowhunt in. After driving through the hills and vails for a few years i’ve found that when creeks and smaller rivers wind back and forth making sharp turns like a sawblade it usually means a hilly area and probably timber on those hills. I look at a length of a highway through known hilly country and what it does on my version of streets then i drive to an area that i’ve chosen and alot of the times its terrain is close to what i was looking for. I’ve found that when a small river or creek wanders without making too many turns its gentle sloping and alot of times theres hills around, just not big ones, these are the areas where I see bigger river bottom timbers that go quite a ways off the river on these wider river bottoms and creeks. The sharper turning creeks and small rivers have mostly hardwoods along them on thier hillsides, thus theres the foods that these hillsides produce for deer, acorns etc. The river and creek bottoms along the wandering rivers and creeks have the foods that softwoods produce, those kinds of plants that deer feed on there, bush browse etc. Take diffrent hunting conditions of cold, wind and remember the types of plants that a deer would feed on during those conditions and it could help a person choose the area type to hunt that day if he or she has four or five places to go that they have checked out earlier using a version of streets. If im interisted in looking for a area for new hunting possibilities i get my version of streets out and check out what it looks like to narrow the places down, then go check to see if im right. Put this together with a typo map of the same area to give elevations and a person could really narrow an area down. You could check out a whole county mile by sq. mile and really narrow it down without leaving the chair. Anybody else do this type of checking, with streets or typo maps to find a new area befor they go check it out or have any other or similar techniques?
