I want to expand my biggame seasons and purchase a smokepole. I was wondering if people have a preferance in muzzleloader calibers .45,.50,.52,.54 ?? I read some impressive stats on the .52?? Thanks

The 50 cal is the most popular size. Can’t go wrong with it and it is always easy to find ammo, etc, for them.

Ryan HaleDecember 11, 2005 at 8:08 pm #13137The huge selection of projectiles and other options make the 50 caliber the best choice. You can soup it up or tone it down for a wide variety of hunting or shooting. Enjoy.

December 14, 2005 at 3:16 am #13233I also got my Omega at Cabelas and also saved $100 with vouchers as well. You will love the Omega it is a great gun, and you got it at a great price it really pays to be a Cabelas Club member.

December 14, 2005 at 7:02 pm #13245At the store, all we sell are .50 cals. Thompson/Center, Traditions, Knight, CVA, and some others. The .50 cals are definitely the most popular. I found out something very interesting this year. I talked to some people at T/C and CVA and they both said most of the employees shoot .45 calibers. I didn’t get specifics on why they do. He predicted that .45 caliber sales will increase in the near future.

December 17, 2005 at 2:56 pm #13318I’ll tell you why….look at the ballistics on the back of powerbelts. The 45 was “the” caliber of choice a few years back but is now getting harder and harder to find accessories for. The only thing that makes sense to me is because some states have a minimum of 50 cal, maybe that’s why..I don’t know

December 27, 2005 at 12:20 pm #13476Now that I purchased my 50 cal. TC muzzleloader and read up on them I still wonder about getting the .45 cal.?? This is for deer. Staff from several namebrand companies all seem to use the .45 ?? I noticed they are hard to find in stores??And it looks better on paper… It kinda appears that with modern technology the shotgun class deer will be overtakening the muzzleloader class as “more challenging”…. hunt??? YA think ??

December 27, 2005 at 8:59 pm #406916I shoot a .45 caliber CVA. Shot 4 deer with it this month, no problems. Have to buy bullets/powder etc online or drive 20 miles to Bass Pro…hmm tough choice there. I like shooting it though.
