Ok, so even with the wind blowing Mach 3 and the temps reading 12 degrees, I was determined to get my buddy out and on some birds yesterday morning, even if it was for only a short two hour hunt. I arrived to the honey hole10 minutes before legal shooting time. As I got my coat, vest and boots on, the hound was out doing his duty and getting rev’d up. I felt the brisk wind and the cold temps and I had 2nd thoughts, but pushed on and got the gun and shells out. Figuring the birds would find somewhere out of the wind I headed for a low spot that would be out of the wind with a NW wind. I had already kicked a rooster up on the way in as I parked the truck, so I was pumped and ready . As soon as we got close to the low spot, Rufus started to get really birdy. The next thing I knew, Mayhem started to cut loose as birds started to get up. Hen, hen , hen , Rooster to far out, hem, hen, then after yelling no bird as Rufus began to break after a flyer, a beautiful rooster erupts at my feet . Boom, boom was all I got out and the bird was already way to far out. Man that bird traveled a big distance in a hurry once he got up in that wind, only cause my poor shooting on the first shot . We pushed up to the crest of the hill and Rufus was on another bird that was on the run. Sitting Rufus down once I caught up to him and released him back on the bird. Thinking the bird would fly with the wind just like all the previous birds. I just stayed down wind of the dog as he flushed the Rooster, I put the gun up and boom down goes the bird, with Rufus hot on his tail. After the retrieve and very happy with my dogs work, I give him some water and pats on the head.

I worked my way back down into the bowl to check the other side when I hear some close shots that seem to be from the property I’m on. Working back to the truck, I hear a few more close shots and know now they have to be from the same property. So, I work directly towards the truck, kicking up a few hens along the way. Once back at the truck, I load the dog and unload my gun to drive up top to see what the heck is going on. As I get to the top I see 2 pick ups and 6 hunters out in the CRP field on the property . Now I know, I am the only one besides one muzzle loader guy that has permission on this pheasant haven . I park and walk out to the group and ask them how they are doing? They said they had a couple, but a few weeks ago they were here and limited out both days . As I do the math in my head 6 guys x 2 birds x 2 days that is 24 birds. I asked them, “if they had permission to be on the land?” They said yes, a few weeks back the guy that owns the land was out there with them. I said, “Really”. They said yes, but they had to work for the birds that day . “Hmm,” I said, “That would be tough to do”, and the guy gave me the blank stare. I said, “That guy has been dead for about a year. . The person that controls this land is his daughter”. I asked, if they seen the posted signs? They said no, but it did not matter they had permission. I said “No you don’t”. As I escorted the one guy to the corner post to see the posted sign. I said, “Here you want to talk to her??? I have her on my phone and I’m positive you do not have permission to be out here.” .

He said , but the other guy owns the property . I told him that he and his group is trespassing and to leave the property otherwise I will call her right now and she would prosecute anyone that was on the property. I told him, if I saw him out here again I would call the police. I’ know now that next year when I post this property my name is going to be on the signs if at all possible and the land manager. That would have given me authority to whoop some right there on the spot .

Now I’m steamed and this incident severely cut into my time to hunt, so I get in my truck and get back down below only to find a white minivan parked on the road and 2 hunters on the piece below. Now I’m already wound up form hearing that people have taken a huge amount(at least 24) of birds off the property already and now I find two more guys hunting the property

I walk up to these guys and flat out tell them “You are trespassing “. They said no they are not and blurted out some name and said he owns from the ditch over. I tell him NO he owns from the tree line / old fence line over. They said oh… we THOUGHT he owned this also. I bring them out to the corner post to show them also and flat out tell them that the police would be called next time they are on the property. They must of thought I was one complete hole, but I had had it So my morning hunt was wasted but at least I caught a few people and gave them an earful. I’m on patrol down there tomorrow so don’t urine me off I’m also putting Posted signs every 2′ on center .

That was my short hunt report from Turkey Day! I’m heading back for at least one more day perhaps two this weekend, depending if I can tag along with a certain someone on Sunday You know who you are

Thanks for letting me vent I feel a little better

Please guys and gals respect the laws and peoples property

    Lip Ripper,
Man, do I feel your pain. Back when I lived on the farm it was almost a full-time job keeping trespassers out this time of year. Sad thing is had they asked my dad for permission most of em would’ve been able to hunt legally…atleast the pheasant hunters, deer was a different story! I see a lack of tough law enforcement with fines that are too affordable, often times a language barrier (or should I say a “supposed” language barrier), overdevelopment which forces more people onto smaller parcels, and mostly the “ME,ME,ME” factor as the biggest contributing factors to this growing problem. I know not everyone can afford their own hunting land (myself included), but everyone has the ability to knock on a door and politely ask for permission to hunt. I’m sorry to hear half a days hunting was wasted, but happy to hear the trespassers didn’t go unchallenged. Be careful though, you never know when one of them -holes will wanna go toe to toe and be beligerant about leaving. Good-luck on your next hunt and I enjoy your hunting stories!

Thats sucks Rob!!! I can totally relate, I have had that happen in the past on my uncles land. His property is adjecent to some WMA and we have posted the hell out of it and people still just walk right on over. I bow hunt out there and there is nothing more frustrating then having your hunt ruined by a bunck of !!!! Glad to hear that the dog was having a great day, nothing better then watching them hunt. By the sounds of it you are on one heck of a chunk of land with all those birds around. You need someone else to join you ever say the word!!!

    I hear you guys!

Yes the hound was pumped to be ack out after the crazed Deer Hunting 4 week bender. Glad it was cold to keep the dog fresh longer. He is out of shape, my own fault. I had him running about 4 miles a day 3-5 times a week until the Rut hit. He was cut, time to start all over. Might have to head South and floow the bird season in Jan/Feb

He had shown signs of pointing and begining to lock up, he just wouldn’t hold her. Maybe this weekend . The birds were holding really tight or they would run. Basically had to get right on top on ofto get them to flush.

Dang Rob! My wife saw my screen from across the room…she said “print it off and let’s use it for a Christmas tree!”

Had the same thing happen only with wood. Guy was cutting down a trees…said the “old man don’t care…I asked him”.

“Old Guy’s” been dead two years yesterday.

There’s my light bulb for your tree!

This is a prime example of why so many farmers tell us “NO” when we go and ask permission. You have to patrol your property on a daily basis, and if they come in and get birds one day without incident, they will be back. Sad!

I hear you BlackDuck, but it is hard to patrol every day when I’m 2 hours and 15 minutes from doorstep to doorstep. I was there Saturday and there were Muzzleloader Hunters that were like vultrues around the land. You could just tell they wanted on the land and with all the tire tracks on the ground you know they have been on there

Oh yeah thanks for a great day Slider! .

This is the paranoid side of me, but after last year’s horrific shootings, be darn careful when confronting people with guns.

I’ve been there when land owners and trespassers clash and it’s funny how the guy in the wrong think’s he owns the world. If they would admit they are wrong and apologize for being somewhere they shouldn’t be things would go so much smoother.

One thing you may want to do is call there license plate numbers into your home or cell voicemail, just in case… Then go out into the field an start smacking them around!!

Wouldn’t it be fun to have one of these babies on hand?!

    http://www.wheelboots-immobilizers.com/wheelclamps.html

Lock down the vehicle they leave parked along the side of the road along with a note that reads “Come see me and the sherriff up to the house when you’re done trespassing.

    Signed,

The Guy that put up the No-Trespassing Signs and Pays the Property Taxes.”

Now I need some of those! The funny thing is these guys were parked on the property.

Very good tip Kooty about leaving the license # on your voicemail or on someone elses with an explanation
